Viewer Challenge: Dual OS Laptop- One Being Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. and the Other Being a Game OS (Wii, PS3, XBOX, etc.)

I've always had the idea of a dual OS laptop. Sure, I've seen XBOX, PS3, and Wii laptops, but what about a laptop with a game OS and a regular PC OS? If that can't be done, what about the ability to switch between a game OS and a PC OS (i.e. a switch that controls the input of the monitor between game and PC)? I would be amazed to see this happen...

  • None of them are really setup to run off eachother in their native ways.  If you were a linux guru you might be able to get a basic version of linux to run off one of those systems.  There are PC emulators out there for homebrew on those systems.  But really emulation is the only way to do it if you're running off the same hardware.

     

    The easy way to do it is just have two separate sets of hardware mobo HDD and all most of his designs could easily add the space especially if you used a netbook's hardware.  You could also opt for a micro ATX set up also or something similar.  I suppose you could combine one disc drive fairly easily.  Basically just add a laptop mobo and HDD to one of Ben's console laptops and have keyboard and mouse and you could toggle the screen back and forth on the fly.  That would allow both to run simultaneously.

     

    You could also easily dual boot the PC side of the house if you desired

  • The only one that really has OS capabilities would be the PS3.  They've been known for the Homebrew Linux projects for the PS3.  That would give you an operating system, however I don't know if it's fully operational(read graphics capabilities).  Then it might be an option.  Interesting thought though.

  • use a beagle board to provide the pc functionality and use an hd moniter that supports multible inputs http://beagleboard.org/ this could even allow for on the fly switching back to the desktop environment as it only draws two watts.  Add a usb hub and you have all the functionallity of a full blown laptop, the only thing missing will be an optical drive. Maybe you can figure out a way to get the console's drive to split its signal and output to usb as well.
