Hi Everyone!
If you got chance to ask Ben Heck a question, what would you ask him?
What's your favorite color? (Blue! no Green! aaaaaahhhhhh!) Just kidding! What's your favorite movie? Would you ever go back to making movies? (or did you stop?) Would you ever consider using your tech projects to fund your movies?
He does talk about Roadhouse a lot, but it's Ed Wood.
There are always more manual methods for the things Ben makes. Rotary(like Dremel) and other powered hand tools can be used to do some of the laser cutting and routing he does. As for the 3D printing: carving foam, making molds, and casting out of stiffer material is the next best option, though it is slower and frequently less precise. It does give you more options for materials that the object can be made of, though. A lot can be done with precise measuring and an X-acto blade.
If you don't have access to big fancy machines, check online for tutorials for the slower methods, or figure out how much use you might get out of a CNC machine and consider the investment. Even if there isn't a local makerspace, there may be other makers in your area that would be interested in splitting the cost of a CNC machine. Maybe try talking to your local library about either starting a maker meetup or convincing the library to buy a 3D printer that you might be able to use.
I live fairly close to him but don't know where he actually resides in. According to google maps I live around 10 mins from him in his general city. Wish I could meet him though.
I'd ask Ben if he's ever wanted or needed to make a video on a serious topic, where the usual antics had to be left out ?
How he got into electronics and how he handles stress if he cant get something to work or when it blows up.
Why do you always work under such tight time frames. Why not give you and your partners more time to complete a project so you can do it right? Geez , seeing the stress you guys are under to get done in time on some of your episodes stresses me out just watching. So, why not give yourselves more time?
The people of the internet want a new episode every week (if not more often) and we try to give the people of the internet what they want. Hence the tight schedule.
