Viewer Challenge - Water cooled Blanket

pshlos
pshlos over 13 years ago

Dear Ben my name is George and I am from Greece. Forgive my English.

It gets very hot here, I cant sleep, and I had an idea of a blanket than you can sit or lay on that will keep you cool. I thought of a system like a computer water cooling system with peltier for cooling the water. There would be a very long hose which runs through the "blanket" which the water will cool.

Maybe even being able to reverse the polarity on the peltier's so it will warm the wife at winter!

I hope this sounds interesting!

Best regards,

George

what about getting an air conditioner??? and to make some project out of it why not make a blanket that just connects to the air conditioner n fills the blanket with cold air probally use a sleeping bag material cause its cooler and the air could escape threw one side and yeah have it so the blanket stays together dosnt blow into a big balloon.

They do make water cooled blanket's. Also water cooled vests and seat covers. They are not cheap but they do exist. For example http://www.polarproducts.com/polarshop/pc/Cool-Flow-Blanket-System-p112.htm. NASA also has active cooling for space suits and stuff like that http://www.nasa.gov/pdf/544886main_LS5_Cool-Space-Suits_C1.pdf.

hi. what about a water coller bed or air coller bed.  with 2 tubes atached to the air pump hole.   1  cooling air and another to extract air separated by distance and maybe a temperature sensor inside image

I dont think enough heat would travel through the cusioning to make it worth water cooling a bed. However you could just pump cold water through a pipe in the bed, but it would probably be more effective (and less painful to lay on) to just use a fan with cold water running through it to aircondition the room.

Air conditioning the room is not effective. When you lay on your couch the coussions trap your body heat in them and become hot. So the top half of your body is cool from the a/c and the bottom half sweats from the couch absorbed heat! The problem is how to remove the couch-heat.

I am afraid it will become very wet under a Water cooled Blanket. Not because of possible leaks, but  because cold air cannot contain as much water as warm air. So condensation will occur. People also produce water. Air conditioning the bedroom is a better solution. If you do not want to cool the whole room, you could make an air conditioned bed, using an air cooled blanket. I think about a double wall blanket with small holes at the underside. Cold air can be blown through these holes. Cold air can be obtained from a small refrigerator using a fan and a wide hose to the blanket.
