Do it Yourself Radio station

So I was thinking today about what it might take to build your own radio station. I want to do this myself, but I am no hardware engineer, I do Ruby and Python programming and honestly I haven't ever really gotten into hardware, as much as I want to. So, does anyone have any ideas for this? I want to build a set of transmitters/receivers almost like walkie talkies but functioning over radio waves on a large scale and range. I would like an operational range of at least 60 miles, perhaps piggybacking off booster towers in the area. They don't need to be battery powered or anything. In fact one could be a receiving or listening station and one could be a dedicated server computer which did the broadcasting. My only problem is I don't want to use wifi for the receiver. But I don't mind using it for the transmitter. It could also use text sent over radio almost like Ben's radio texting devices but with a much much larger operational range. Any ideas?

I would start with the ARRL.org website and the other references given here. On the ARRL homepage you can find a link to clubs. A quick check showed 30 different amateur radio clubs in OK, so there might be one near you. People in your situation, who live in the boonies, tend to gravitate to radio as its a way to connect that’s been around a lot longer than the Internet.

so is open spectrum more of a movement in the works or an actual practice?
