Clip on display for Hats / Baseball caps

Greyelf

I'm handicapped and have to use crutches and a wheelchair to get around. I primarily use the crutches as I still like to try and visit parks and sites that make using a wheelchair cumbersome. I.E. geocaching, camping and such.

I use my android phone, (same kind apparently that you use Ben,) for directions and to prevent me from getting lost.

This brings me to the question.

I'm wondering if you can come up with a display that could be clipped on to a baseball cap or hat that   would be able to connect to a smart phone, (iphone, blackberry, or my favorite android,) to give real time information. The connection should be wireless/blue-tooth enable but even a wired connection would be fine as I usually wear a backpack when going places.

Although you could add a second screen to a call phone using iDisplay or just plugging some phones in through the HDMI port, I have a more pragmatic approach.

Just attach the cell phone to the brim via a clip similar to a dashboard mount.

That would almost work ... If the cell phone wasn't so big and heavy that it pulled my cap off after 2 steps.

But my cell phone is an android and ruffly the same size and shape an Iphone is, if not heavier.

It is a good idea that might work with something smaller and lighter. Then again very few "little / lite" phones have the features I need. Such as GPS and map display to name two.

You should get an HP Veer (Webos smartphone). It is the smallest and lightest full features smartphone available  (featuring everyone's favorite mobile OS - WebOS). I used one briefly,  and it is quite small and light. I have large hands, but I found the  slideopen keyboard very accurate and usable.

Since HP has disolved the Webos device division in  there company you can find these phone for almost nothing online, off  contract, or free on contract.

At the moment it works only with AT&T in the USA.

Thank you Cabe, that phone is maybe close to what I need. If I can find it cheap as everything has to be done on a “limited / shoestring” budget because I'm a handicapped veteran on a REAL limited budget.

I still would like to come up with a "small" clip-on or mod for a hat / cap.

I've also been trying to come up with an interface to attach to the hand-grips on my forearm crutches.

This interface should allow me to navigate the menus and programs on my smartphone. The whole thing, (interface / controller, smartphone, and clip-on display,) could be connected wirelessly BUT it might be better to interconnect with wires to conserve battery life.

    Grey,

Ok, if you want to design something, let's work on the requirements:

    1. Small, attachable to a hat or elsewhere.

    2. Remote control from the hand. (No touchscreen then?)

    3. GPS enabled with a map function. (true map and directions needed or would just coordinates work?)

    4. Possibly a relayed screen from another device.

Does that cover the system's needs?
