Op-Amp-a-Palooza: What's Something Fun We Could Do with the Upcoming Op-Amp Contest?

9 Feb 2022

Greetings Best Community Members in the Galaxy!

Op-Amps will be the next Project14 competition.  This will be a contest featuring low cost components.  There's so much that can be done with OpAmps: Amplifiers and buffers, measurement, active filters, voltage references, current measurement, audio vs RF vs HT, precision circuits low noise circuits making one from discrete components

We will be doing something a bit different with this contest.   You are free to choose whatever components but we'll be offering a kit with low cost components from as many as four different suppliers.  What we were wondering is if you had any cool ideas on what we could do to make this next contest more fun?  For example,  we recently had a Spy Nerd Contest that included cool spy gadgets as prizes.   What are your ideas on what you would like to see in this contest?   It could be a fun prize or something we would have never thought of.   The Op-Amps contest is suppose to start on February 14th but to accommodate some last minute planning we'll likely move the launch date to February 18th.

Random thoughts: replace (or re-design) an existing circuit with a (different) op-amp. Break into categories (amplifier, reference, transconductance, etc) and judge based on the component count. e…

Perhaps you can get Digilent to sprinkle some more ADP3450s around

A  small or portable PC projector - for example:

    Random thoughts:

replace (or re-design) an existing circuit with a (different) op-amp.

Break into categories (amplifier, reference, transconductance, etc) and judge based on the component count. e.g., what is the minimum number of external components to build various op-amp-based circuits.

    Best use of single-supply op-amps.

Operational Amplifiers can do everything, what's a circuit where they shouldn't? (worst use of an op-amp?)

    ---

Yeah, I'm not sure any of those are good ideas, but I'll throw them out there. Slight smile

To prepare for the next competition, the topic could be 'Could have done it with a 555' Wink

Or to be able to enter my idea: Do something educational.

Something that goes well with Op-Amps are passive components.  A nice gift might be a kit of resistors, capacitors and/or inductors.  It would be nice to allow the winners to choose between through hole or surface mount components as peoples skill and comfort levels are different.  There use to be some kits of analog devices (like Op Amps and such), but I am not seeing much in stock.
