Ho-Ho-Hold on a minute, is that a blog? A new way to submit your project!

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the holiday special for Project 14, and this year we are doing something a little different.

We want to showcase your projects in the best possible way, and to do that we're creating a different way for you to blog about your project.

When you submit an entry to the Project14 Competition things will look a little different.

We want to guide you through creating the most important parts of your blog post for the project, and to do that we're giving you some fields to fill in which will show your projects in the best way possible.

When you submit an entry it'll look a little like this:

image

Now, if you're using a mobile phone, you'll get a reduced experience, so we advise using a tablet, laptop or desktop computer for setting these up.

Do note the tabs across the top, you can navigate to these directly, or you can click 'next' at the bottom.

Your usual method of blogging is under 'main details'

image

And you can fill out 'References' with your sources and details that you've used to create your project with, kinda like you might do to cite your sources on an academic paper or engineering journal

image

Here are some quick tips for your project:

  • Be sure to tag your project with appropriate keywords!
  • Choose a nice, clear, hi-resolution photo' for your thumbnail
  • Your 'references' are any websites, projects, books or other sources you've used to help you with your project! You can use academic style referencing if you wish.
  • Once you've inserted content, like an image or video, click on the 'box' that appears to customise it further and provide 'alt' text.
  • There should only be 1 (one) category to choose from for this competition.
  • Use Headings as these will create a table of contents (Format -> Formats -> Headings -> Heading 1 to 6) or use h tags in the page source.
  • In future, the 'history' tab should contain your drafts, until then you should be able to find it via the pencil on the left, keep a bookmark of your project while editing to easily find it later.
  • You can also access your draft blog by going to the 'pencil' icon in the top left when you visit community.element14.com/.../holiday-projects

I'm currently aware that you may be able to publish and unpublish other people's project articles at the time of writing, don't do it lest there be consequences. We're looking at fixing it.

If you have any problems, let us know in Feedback and Support , though I won't ignore them if you reply here too as this functionality is still in development.

I would've opted for "Ho-Ho-Hold on a minute" myself, but I guess this will make it easier and nicer to browse the content :). - Gough

Hi scottiebabe , you're not too far off and it will look nicer than this and only get better from there IMHO.

Nice tariq.ahmad . I really like the project blog format, especially the project thumbnail.

With some project blogs, the members are encouraged to blog every so often to share milestones and progress.

Does the Main Details Tab allow for multiple entries for staged blogging ? The normal blogging treats each blog as a separate project submission. It would be useful for the main details TAB to allow chapters.  Nothing like a functionality suggestion after you did all the work :-)

Asfar as I understand it, You should create only one project and if you need more "paper", than you should use regular blogs which you can link in your project.

It does not. We have no nice way of linking multiple project articles, or even blogs.

Simply re-edit the same project and update it.

You can separate sections of the project by ensuring you use 'headings'

    Format -> Formats -> Headings -> Headings 1-x

    Then it'll auto-create a navigation for them.

These projects are intended to replace the 'regular blogs' for the competitions, not to be used alongside them. For example, members cannot post blogs to this group.

OK thx Chris. To save everyone's sanity, I'll hold off making multiple progress blogs. I did decide & start a project. Step 1 required a 35 hour 3D print which I had problems lately getting a 4 hour print to go. After an teardown & cleaning of the extruder, and reversing the feed gear on the servo shaft, the printer did the 35 hr print fine. I was so happy to not have issues, I hurried up and 3D printed it again so I have a backup if I mess it up while building the rest of the project.

If you want to make progress posts, please post in the forums. Then there's no worry over how short or long the update is, it's still great to see what's happening Slight smile

Is not it easier to enable blogs also? Most of these updates from robogary  are in scope of blog rather than forum post.

We're purposefully going to see how this works out. Sometimes you need examples in earnest before deciding whether or not to continue with it, and we're at that stage.

We're using blogs in the group for Community staff posts about the competition, we would have used 'wiki documents' but that doesn't work well for sharing them on group homepages or across the site, wiki documents should really be for wikis.

What we can do, depending on how this goes, is create a separate 'blog' for members to use and one for staff to use. We can convert between content types, so if it turns out that the forum posts would work better as blog posts, then we can convert them later.

These decisions are also made for how best member content is exposed to search engines and across the site within the limitations we have.
