You may have wondered about the lack of updates on my security system for the Forget Me Not challenge. I apologise for this, but want to provide some explanation.
Life has certainly been conspiring against me for this challenge. First I had my car broken into and my laptop stolen. Then I had my fair share of shipping delays and lost parcels. And then recently a close friend passed away suddenly. With all the events it's been difficult to make headway and also to keep up momentum.
I have been enjoying reading about everyone else's progress, but am acutely aware that I am far behind where I had hoped to be at this stage.
Anyhow, I want to provide a brief summary of where I have got to and where I plan to go next. I'm typing this from my new laptop - insurance finally came through and I got it yesterday. I still need to set everything up and install updates, etc.
So far I have received from Element 14 the Raspberry Pi B+, EnOcean Pi, the EnOcean EOP350 programmer board and most recently the RPiSoc. I have not yet received the EnOcean sensor kit and so have been unable to play with the contact sensors which were going to be an integral part of my project.
As detailed in an earlier post, I have installed openHAB on the RPi B+ and learnt how to configure it. I then interfaced it with a USB webcam for motion detection.
I also purchased a couple of cheap PIR sensor modules (only USD1.59 each!), which run off 5V (so can be powered by the RPi) and provide a 3.3V logic output. These work great (just use the openHAB gpio binding), even over long cables.
I've been wanting to dabble with Bluetooth and openHAB, but the USB Bluetooth dongle I ordered online quite some time ago has not eventuated yet. As soon as I get my hands on one, I plan to write up another post on this.
