Inductive Sensing Design Challenge: Portable Detector based on the LDC1000 (#1)

Following is the idea of the application:

image

With the TI LDC1000EVM module(s), I will build a portable, wireless metal detector. Using these modules will result in a much more sensitive device.

A smartphone or tablet will be used as a remote display as this can show a nice user interface and saves money.

The detector will contain one or possibly more of the TI LDC1000EVM modules (for depth adjustment, target positioning) and custom coils.

A micro-controller (e.g. Cypress PSoC 4, TI MSP430F5529) will act as an interface between the modules and the remote display.

For communication it is possible to use Bluetooth or WiFi (depending on required speed and power usage). This will be an additional add-on module using a I2C, SPI or UART interface. The device will have an USB port for charging and for updating the software.

An App will be created for iPhone/iPad and Android devices (this is the easy part).

The App will be used to change parameters for the modules and to display measurements (graphical) and the composition of a detected object.

Sound can be used with headphones for audio feedback.

I briefly looked at it before. I believe it does not have the answer to every configuration. I hope to adjust the sensor dynamically through software depending on coil used.

    Hi Elbert,

Make sure you take a look at the TI site.  They have a great video on how you can change to coil size and retune the device to maximize its sensitivity.

I am sure there are a number of people interested in your progress.
