- I intend to make a video that shows me creating a working hand held, portable gaming device
- I will post the video on the element14 Community by the submission deadline, 2-April-2018
- If my video is one of the top 10 finalists I will receive $500 for my video
I have (now) also posted an audition video.
That all sounds well and good, perhaps it would have been better to say I intend to try and Hack Like Heck? Or maybe that I am intending to make a handheld portable that might work?
I have always loved engineering, making things work.
When I was about 6 my parents bought me and my sister walkmans so we wouldn't argue about what to listen to in the car on a 3-day long car journey. Needless to say whilst playing at a playground at a "pit stop" I broke my headphones... I spent the next leg of the journey trying to work out how they should work, and what went wrong. I still remember the pure excitement when they crackled back to life.
As I got older, and we got our first computer with Windows 95 on it, I was pretty well instantly hooked. I remember our struggle squeezing an ISA card into place, or the first time I put a socket 3 processor in the wrong way round.
I still love to play (much to my wife's dismay). I have a number of projects on the go at any one time, just to keep me entertained, and they are always aspirational, trying to push the boundaries of what I know, what I have learned.
I have enjoyed The Ben Heck Show since I discovered it just over a year ago, and although I am not as experienced as Ben, I think the opportunity to learn more and help the community learn with me would be a chance not to miss.
To make a handheld portable, I would love to see something that is practical above all else. I have always enjoyed the portables Ben has produced, and there have been some great portables produced through history. But I am slightly reminiscent of the first Sony transistor radio - where the salesmen wore special shirts with slightly oversized pockets to show them as "pocket radios". How small and portable could it go? how discreet while still being comfortable to play?
