Play Nice - I mean it.

The Hack Like Heck contest was meant to be a fun way for element14 to uncover new video talent – engineers smart enough to make new electronics projects on an ongoing basis – sharing their passion and love of electronics with others.

  • We wanted to see what types of projects you could create on a short timeline – while producing a video.
  • We wanted to see your soldering chops.
  • We wanted to see how you behaved as a member of the community.

 

As the community lead on this project and Executive Producer of The Ben Heck Show – that’s what this contest is still about. 

  • I’m paying attention to your ability to clearly explain a project in a well-produced video that shows your own work in progress.
  • Anyoe who filmed their soldering had great soldering skills.
  • And now I’m watching how you are behaving as a member of the community.

 

If you think someone has been gaming the votes – be assured that as a site admin I can see all the votes and star ratings and shares.  Yes, it’s odd that there are a bunch of Eric Millers voting – but if you go to Andrew’s facebook page, you’ll see a lot of Eric Millers in his list of friends. Now, if any Eric Miller registered multiple times (which could be determined by looking at time stamp, IP addresses and such) then that might be grounds for disqualification.  Of course, Uncle Eric might have thought he was doing you a favor – so if that happened, have him log in and un-check his “Like” vote.

 

Please don’t make us take the time to sift through your activity.  Please don’t try to solicit phony votes.   If we have to take the time to investigate your voting activity then there’s a good chance you will be disqualified from the contest.  Please don’t make us disqualify you.

    I have only watched a few episodes (bandwidth issues, etc) but I did watch the bit about finding someone who could fill the hole Ben is leaving.

     

    The competition is one part of trying to find someone, and the build is a good method of seeing if they can do it.

    We've seen Design Challenges where great ideas don't turn into reality and while some are unavoidable, others are the applicant, and planning.

     

     

    I've read the discussion and feel that the points made in it would suggest some people are just not going to be able to do projects regularily.

    Is it the right place to voice the concerns, ... we do support transparency and Open Source here in the community. image

     

    Before coming here I witnessed really bad arguments and name calling, etc on another community.

    Since the moderators wouldn't do anything, I along with quite a few others, stopped being there.

    Thankfully there has been very little of the name calling ... some accusations and evidence to support that (on both sides).

     

    Vote rigging is something people will do to win, and unfortunately those that do the rigging are usually trying to overcome some other shortcoming in their work.

    So before you engage in manipulating the votes, you may want to look a lot harder at the work you've presented.

     

    Your blog should say if you're having issues and why.

    This is part of Engineering ... to understand why you have the problem, because if you don't then you can't fix it, or put something in place to mitigate it.

     

    I've had personal experience of ideas being copied and passed off as their own.

    The person that did it to me, doesn't get the pleasure of a greeting any more ....

    So be honest and if you're not sure where you got the info from, say so but don't ever try to give the impression it was your own.

     

     

    For anyone interested, one of our elections had the National party 'borrow' a song by Eminem by using someone else to make something that was like it.

    In the end the court ruled they breached copyright, but the point was they tried going around it ....

  • I have to ask image is there any particular reason why we are marked in there? I haven't even liked my own entry and tried to promote the hole contest instead of my personal entry (only started today). I tried to be neutral in a certain discussion, but took part in it. Was it that? I'm mildly confused.

  • I know that it isn't the point of this thread, but honestly I wish I was able to record more soldering footage. My only camera source was my phone, which isn't really conducive towards getting that type of footage. I did a few soldering tutorials with a webcam in the past, but those weren't very good quality, so I opted to go with some still shots of after-the-fact. Hopefully the closeups of the soldering to 0.1mm traces will suffice!
