If we arranged an element14 Community get together / party - what would we do?

Following on from If we arranged an element14 Community get together / party - would you want to go?

What would we do at such a meet up?

A few suggestions from the Community team have been:

- Ask people to bring their projects to talk about, perhaps in some kind of presentation format. People demo' their projects where possible.

- Barcamp style talks or slideshows, people talk about a piece of tech' news, or tech' they've worked on or opinions on the industry they want to share / express

- May be able to visit the distribution warehouse, though this depends on number of people and availability to arrange it, so I wouldn't promise that one too much.

- Community keynote/presentation/discussion, get some input from attendees about the Community and a chance for members to ask the Community team questions as well, perhaps this could be linked between the Leeds / Chicago office to get the whole team involved.

I'm not sure but we might be able to get someone from one or more of our suppliers if that was an interest, though usually they would want to see it from a sales perspective rather than a casual get together, still if there was a product that people wanted to know more about then we could probably arrange something like that?

Event might be near the offices rather than at the offices, depending on numbers, so somewhere in/near Chicago/Leeds.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I didn't even know what a Barcamp was so obviously had never participated in one (sheltered life ) - had to look it up. I don't know how much of this is possible, feasible or desirable but what interests…

Surely "drink beer" (or equivalent alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverage) must be involved?

I would certainly be interested in seeing a large distribution warehouse operation if that were feasible.

My interests would be meeting everyone in an informal setting.

I would be available to discuss my many years as a member and I could discuss how I have seen the community change over the years.

Basically I think a celebration of what element 14 has accomplished is in order. Consider it a big birthday party and just make it fun.

I haven't personally experienced this yet, but Barcamp style looks interesting. Smaller groups where everyone can (but does not have to) discuss/present etc. It might be also a great way to get feedback on current and future project ideas.

Some easy games would be great, for smaller teams (depending on a number of attendees) - just to get know each other in an informal way and find out, what are the other passionate about.

Visiting offices / warehouse would be a bonus.

I'm sure people would be interested in walking through the warehouse just to gawk at all the expensive and shiny things you have there. But besides that, I'm sure various engineers could probably talk for weeks anyway.

One thing I think might be of some use would perhaps be to arrange a "swap-meet" kind of thing, where people might be able to bring in something interesting, perhaps old and unused but well loved ... and pass it on to someone who might want it (or trade it for something else that catches their eye). I'm sure we probably all have some surplus stuff at the end of the day ...

Short tech demos would be good, perhaps some food. But all I know is that I'm probably way too far away in another time-zone to actually join in ... so perhaps those who would be there might want to chime in.

Pick a date in advance and call it as an open house. I think Spring fits for me. A three day weekend works. Thanks cstanton for following up on this.

    Several good ideas so far.

I like the idea of a lightly structured format with some talks by members or interesting suppliers (but no marketing nonsense).

Show and tell benches, swapping, some hands on workshop stuff.

Evening get together for those who wish.

    At least 3 months notice.

Was anyone at the OSHCamp in Hebden Bridge last weekend, that was a pretty good format.

I personally can't for the foreseeable future, though people could have an unofficial drink before/after at a local establishment. image

I usually go but gave it a miss this time, I followed Drew Fustini's antics there though image

I didn't even know what a Barcamp was so obviously had never participated in one  (sheltered life image) - had to look it up.

I don't know how much of this is possible, feasible or desirable but what interests me is:

    • meeting some element14 members
    • meeting some element14 staff
    • an inside insight into element14 programs and forum operations
    • a tour of the distribution center
    • insight into future plans for element14
    • discussion of element14 programs and possibilities
    • discussion of favorite aspects of element14 and maybe pet peeves
    • a little tribute to the forum
    • discussion of past projects, current projects and potential future projects
    • local cuisine
    • some bauble or T-shirt to remember the occasion
