Labview NXG.....RIP

Andrew J
Andrew J over 4 years ago

Well, despite NI pushing this as their next generation LabView version with an intent of winding down the current generation software (currently, LV 2020)  as NXG developed and improved they've about faced.  All that work I did last summer!  Oh well....

Don't feel bad. I once worked on a project for five years only to have it cancelled. Internal politics can be a very dirty game and sometimes you cannot pick the winner. DAB

It may be easier for a new company to come up with a new application. Because they would not have to run 2 development teams. The new product would not steal revenue of their flag product. And they would not have the burden of fairly decent migration options.

I don't think they were trying to be disruptive, just modernise what looked like an old-school bit of software.  Their argument was that the architecture of the CG version was preventing them moving forward.  I suppose bean counters still don't care about that if nobody's buying.  I always said to my teams:  "You'll never get thanked for failing to deliver a well-architected solution"!

I believe the initial plan was to remake what was wrong with the classic labview and then make the switch. I'm not sure why they are not killing NXG instead of the old labview. I just hope that once and for all they improve the UI.

They are killing NXG.  The intention was to re-architect the software, as NXG, so that it could be evolved.  Obviously changed their minds.

I can only guess, but potentially the development of NXG was taking too long and even at version 5 didn’t have anywhere near the functionality of classic so people who used it in anger couldn’t switch.  NXG 5.1 took a year to get out and hasn’t really advanced it.  Take up amongst hardcore users was thus low and revenue would have been minuscule compared to classic if they forced the issue.  They just didn’t move the project fast enough: one can only iterate towards a full solution for a very short period of time before the senior business and finance managers draw a line under it.  Software development is very labour intensive so massively expensive and its all sunk cost, especially as a classic licence got you an NXG licence.  If no one uses it and users want more functionality in classic then it becomes a millstone on the revenue stream.  Given the reasoning behind it in the first place - a better software architecture to make it easier to develop the product in the future - I suspect it was a technology-led project not a business-led one.  Doomed.

Just guessing really.  Personally, I’m hoping what I’ve learned in NXG will translate easily into classic.  I was lucky to start when NI made their training videos free at the start of lockdown last year; they are hideously expensive otherwise!!

What functionality of the classic one is missing in NXG? Lets hope they can transfer the UI of NXG to the classic...

No idea, I've only ever used NXG, but it seemed to be a common refrain on forum posts.  And yes, the UI on classic looks really old skool!
