Where are resources to learn about basic electronics?

jmannheimau
jmannheimau over 4 years ago

Are there any tutorials or resources on this site to help learn about basic electronics? I know a little but would be happy to start from scratch and start learning. Most of what I have come across assumes more advanced knowledge than what I have.

Thanks!

I am definitely biased towards a lot of useful resources here at Elemet14 including Learning Circuits, Workbench Wednesdays, and a lot of Projects which come from basics. I would recommend TI Precision…

Hi John, About 6 years ago I posted a thread that asked a similar question. Many of the guys posted great suggestions. Check it out for more ideas. https://www.element14.com/community/people/jw0752/blog…

You could also try the Make: Electronics books by Charles Platt, I found them a great learning resource.

It appears a bit of action from the movie "Groundhog Dog" staring Bill Murray. The same post repeated three times until you broke the cycle with another.

While the resources available on the site are great references, I would suggest something more formal.

When I say formal I mean, a resource that has a beginning and an end. What does your desire is to learn electronics mean? A formal resource would define the objectives. DC theory, AC Theory, passive and active components, test equipment....

The subject matter involved in electronics is very broad. Check out the learning objectives at a formal institutions like a college or trade school to get an idea. They usually list their programs and what it contains.

https://catalogue.rrc.ca/Programs/WPG/Fulltime/ELEGF-DP/CoursesandDescriptions this is a link for a community college program in my area. If select the DC circuits course to see what that involves.

At one point there were evening course offered in electronics. They provided AC/DC theory, passive components like resistors, capacitors and inductors along with some active devices like transistor. Usually you wound up using a 555 timer integrated circuit, since they were easy to use to construct a working circuit.

I'm a person that likes to have a plan. To that end, if I can't find one, I build one from resources I learn about. Learning electronics has great advantages, especially if you are a person who likes to know how things work. Working through AC & DC theory with a good volt ohm meter (VOM) is a good starting point.

Don't go out a purchase a really expensive VOM meter with a whole bunch of options. My concern, it may not make it through the learning. Measuring voltage when the meter is set to resistive reading usually result in it not working anymore. Ouch if it is an expensive meeting. Get something that works for a few bucks and then discover what you need.

Take some time to invest in mastering soldering. I would purchase a good iron. I'm not suggesting the $500 station but a good pencil with a supply of tips. If you continue to invest in electronics, soldering is something you will do all the time. You can find kits of components to practice board soldering. They are great for working through different components to through to perfect the skill.

Oh yeah, you will need some burn cream for the occasional time the iron touches skin. I have been soldering for 40 years and still managed to burn a knuckle the other day soldering a wire inside a chassis.

The best of luck on your adventure. If you have issues or are looking for some insight, the folks that hang out here are a great resource. No doubt you will find someone that has done something similar to what you are working on.

Electronic kits are a great tool. The learning material is structured to enable the student to progress at their pace. The projects enable the student to build stuff that works and solidify the learning. Good suggestion!
