Seeking Someone to Do a Ferrites Project

rscasny
rscasny over 2 years ago

imageHi All.

In February, we will be publishing an Essentials of Ferrites.

We wanted to do something a little different and add in a project (or it could be an experiment) with ferrites.

The sponsor is sending element14 three ferrites kits to hand out to anyone who is interested in doing this project. You can add in anything else you might think you need.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment or message me.

Cheers.

Randall

I received the 3 kits of ferrites. Here's what it look like:

I might have a capacitor kit it to throw in as well. I was straightening out our office storeroom and saw them. I'll check when I go in the office again on Tuesday. More info then. Have a nice weekend…

    Hi!

Yes, it's a realm where a DIY project is really worthwhile, since the commercial offerings are $$$$ (or $$$$$).

That board is not the same league as the Tiny SA Ultra however. The screenshots below are from watching a few minutes of this video review. I may have got it wrong.

From those screenshots I think the resolution bandwidth cannot be directly set, and so I believe it will have no granularity either. That makes it more a "RF meter with spectrum view" at best, since there is no actual ability to analyze the spectrum to any useful level. Maybe I'm wrong though since as mentioned, I didn't watch the entire video. I think it would be better to just get the TinySA Ultra. (But I have not used that either! so this is all just speculation from me).

This is wonderful! Thanks for getting the link fixed. I have only played with the model for a few minutes in spice but had no issues to get it to work, it looks great!

    Thanks again

    Taifur,

What you are suggesting looks like it has some possibilities. Kind of a before/after comparison testing. If I were to send you the ferrite kit, could you do this and write it up in a blog.

    Hi Weiwei2.

Would you be interested in getting the ferrites kit? Anything else too that is reasonably priced?

I know! They are currently sold out :( Speaking of low cost instruments, here's what my nano VNA had to say.

I have some Wurth Elektronik WE-CBF SMT ferrite beads kicking around, specifically the 742792118 ( 1206 case, 70 mOhm DCR, Zmax 600 Ohms). So, lets take a peak at it with my nano VNA. I soldered the DUT to an SMA jack:

    image

I connected the DUT to port 1 of my VNA for an S11 impedance measurement

    image

From the datasheet we expect the quality factor to be unity at approximately 20 MHz and reach a peak impedance of 600 Ohms at 80 MHz

    image

My nano VNA recorded a peak impedance of 560 ohms at approximately 70 MHz, close enough!

    image

The intersection of resistance and reactance occurred at 21 MHz, close enough!

    image

The bead is exceptionally lossy or dissipative for frequencies above 20 MHz

    image

Great ferrite bead and not too shabby of a result for a $60 VNA lol
