Fast chargers and improvements in battery technology are alleviating some of the concerns that people have with EVs; however, hybrids and ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles can still be great cars.  Take the poll and let us know what kind of car you would buy, and please tell us why in the Comments section below!

    I haven't done the math. I'm just going on the assumption that since my car sits in the garage for up to 7 days not doing anything that there will be enough energy collected to drive it the couple of miles…

    I historically keep a car for about an average 20 years, 150k-200k miles. I do the mundane maintenance. Since my latest purchase is only 5 years old, it will be another 15 years until I'm ready to see…

    They'd have to have a lot of heavy duty lifting trucks for when the vehicles flew off round the corner!!

    Well, I don't want to violate copyright by cut and paste of the entire article, but let me quote one part: 

    His numbers apparently originate with Toyota, setting off a small donnybrook in the green lobbying community. The same battery minerals in one Tesla can theoretically supply 37 times as much emissions reduction when distributed over a fleet of Priuses.

    This is a shock only to those who weren’t paying attention. It certainly isn’t lost on government. Chris Atkinson, the Ohio State University sustainable transportation guru whose slogan I’ve cited before—“the best use of a battery is in a hybrid”—was a key official in the Obama Energy Department.

    The 'ultra low' part is perhaps a bit misleading though. I checked and my old ICE still passed the 'ultra low' part of the test. As do apparently around 80% of vehicles already using the proposed expanded zone.

    It's not just London though, other cities are planning the same, and looks like some are considering much stricter emissions controls.

    In some cases it looks like it can be around half the cost of a new vehicle. Something they tend to leave out of the glossy sales brochure.

    There appear to be other issues often over-looked with the battery side of things. It appears that globally only a very small proportion of lithium batteries are being recycled due to it currently being cheaper to mine new materials than to recycle old ones. However it appears to take over 2million litres of water for around every tonne of lithium mined.

    This presumably needs to change significantly if there is going to be a global shift to EV (along with solar battery storage) otherwise we will end up with more toxic landfill sites and water shortages.

    Don't forget any gas station is trained do maintenance, and you can easily drive coast-to-coast with only 5 minute rest stops to "refuel". /s

    This discussion is making me think ECE might be the better alternative. Wood is renewable after all.

    I had a Toyota Prius for a few years.  It was nice to get 50mpg, however, it wasn't comfortable for a long trip.  The new ones might be better.  I never had problems with the 400V battery, but when the 12V battery died, all sorts of strange crap was happening.  We thought the car was possessed with evil spirits.

    I would choose the ICE option due to advancing technologies in regards to hydrogen fuel.

    There has been so many advancements with ICE technology over the past century to ignore it's future potential with an alternative fuel source.

    An EV still requires all the body and structural components of an ICE, with an addition of extras such as batteries that still require ICE technology to transport and manufacture.

    If the outcome is to be lower carbon emmisions, EV technology has not proven to be the answer!

    The infrastructure is still not adequate to support the volume of EVs they are proposing. In addition, waiting up to an hour to “fill up” an EV is going to cause massive delays.
