WARNING ! AI rots your Brain

michaelkellett

From yesterdays Telegraph:

image

The article is based on work done at MIT

https://www.media.mit.edu/projects/your-brain-on-chatgpt/overview/

https://www.brainonllm.com/

If you follow the second link you can eventually find  .pdf of the full research paper (if you've been using ChatGPT a lot recently you may struggle.)

You have been warned !

This is a no-brainer. But what does AI have to say for itself on the topic?

Calculators rotted our brains. Search engines eliminated the need to learn. AI eliminates the need to think. At risk is human creativity.

That is true only because the ignorance of AI is such that people feel they have to use it.

That mentality will lead to a catastrophic failure.

It is only a question of time.

With luck we will survive the event.

We 'll adapt. That's a difference between us and AI. We adapt when technology fails. And when technology thrives.

As much as I dislike the heavy reliance of people on ChatGPT (and other LLM models), and I hate the current "AI hype" (on this topic: It's terrible that this is what is considered "AI" now, not the thousand of actual application of more specialized algorithms doing great things for the world), what I also dislike is sensationalist media. The MIT research has not been peer reviewed in any way, and it's considered "preliminary" at most. It's in "pre-release" state (meaning it has not even been published officially and they are still reviewing and fine-tuning the text).

The MIT page itself says it better:

Note, that as of June 2025, when the first paper related to the project, was uploaded to Arxiv, the preprint service, it has not yet been peer-reviewed, thus all the conclusions are to be treated with caution and as preliminary.

It's important to note that Arxiv, where it was uploaded, is (as described) a preprint service.

The fact that there are articles being written about it is ridiculous.

I'm not defending ChatGPT, but I wouldn't immediately jump the gun when a report like this comes along, if the results and methodology have not been verified or even evaluated by people outside the research team, and even the research team is still working on it.

It would be great if media stopped writing articles based on early unverified studies and (in some cases) heavily misunderstood science.

Agreed, but so far I have made a lot of money in the stock market trading the AI stocks.

Ignorant traders are so easily spooked from a position of own or not own.

They have created a great trading range as they sell everything, then buy it back later at higher prices.

    Some will survive.

Those who have allowed themselves to be overly dependent upon the internet will suffer greatly.

I also believe that the A.I. learns from the user's corrections to the answers.
I wouldn't use A.I. (at least this commercial one) for critical things, e.g. it's ok for Excel, I'm not attached to anything more.
