We have made changes to the element14 Community homepage!

cstanton
cstanton 3 months ago

Maybe as soon as now!

Behind the scenes we have been making changes based up on your feedback, and some ideas of our own. The changes went live on Tuesday the 5th of May at about 1pm.

What kind of changes?

image

When you're logged into the Community you'll now get a bit more clear information about your account. Where to go to change your avatar, customise your notifications, view your content and see your community activity.

You can also change the achievements you want to highlight on your profile - maybe learn about some achievements you've yet to get? And also what your current level is, and details on how you got there.

We'll be looking into changing this area a little bit in the future, maybe highlighting some more about your account so you can get the most out of it.

When you're logged out of the site, it'll look a little different.

image

We wanted to highlight some of the benefits of the Community to entice people to join. We had to put something here, so we've started with this and we may build upon it in future.

As for the rest of the page?

We're highlighting featured content in a new way.

image

Here you should see content that we think you should see. From our programmes, announcements and otherwise, or maybe a RoadTest and Webinar that have particular interest. Here you may see new and old content featured for you to engage with.

Speaking of content to engage with, Webinars and RoadTests now have a more prominent place, along with the current question of the month (I should update that):

image

You'll get a quick presentation of the past two to three Webinars or RoadTests if there's nothing enrolling right now for you to check out and read up on. We do have a long library of on-demand Webinars after all, and the RoadTest Reviews are definitely a bit more than just a review.

image

Content that overflows from our 'Featured content' will feature in the banner below, from our third party associations through to projects that are still just as important, but we couldn't quite fit in.

image

We now show all of the 'recent content' in one list (well, two, and no more 'tabbed' content) so if there's a new blog post, or forum post or project to the Community it'll be shown straight away and not hidden away.

On the left of this list is who created it and when, in the centre is the title, and where it was created, and on the right an icon to represent the content type, how many views, and how many likes it has.

We have separated the list into 'Latest from the Community' and 'Latest Tech News from our Partners', our partners are those who manage their own group and sell products on the Farnell online stores.

There are some 'stretch goals' we have in mind to improve this layout, filters for the recent content list for one, and surfacing different content when you log in.

Hopefully this will help your content come to the front page sooner and make it easier for you to find your way to what's new, and then we'll be looking at the rest of the site and its sections as we go.

Thanks again for being a part of this journey with us.

    Hi  cstanton ,

I wanted to reach out and say that the new homepage looks fantastic! It truly feels like a major improvement—the layout is impressive, and the overall aesthetic is much fresher.

I can definitely appreciate the immense amount of hard work and late hours you and the entire team have poured into this redesign. It’s clear that a lot of thought went into balancing the different types of content we all look for.

The new navigation is sleek, and as I spend more time using it in my daily workflow, I’ll likely have a few specific suggestions to share. For now, though, I just wanted to congratulate you on a successful launch. It’s a big step forward for the community!

    Best regards,

    Steve K

More feedback - I didn't mention my first comments were posted viewing with the phone app.

Logged in and viewed with a PC , the webpage presentation is significantly better viewed  with a PC.

I like it using the PC.  The phone app doesn't translate as well because the graphics have to be overwhelming to keep them legible.

That's a shame really as it is the one thing it's crying out for in my view.  Still, I like the refresh and I daresay the team can make further tweaks and adjustments.

I think overall it's really good.  I agree with the comments about having to scroll to the member provided content through the other material - how often will "Featured Content" change?  QotM is going to be once a month so when you've seen it, you've seen it.  When I visit the site, which is daily, sometimes multiple times a day, I'm generally interested in Forum, blogs, webinars, other content in that order.  As others have said, I don't need to see my profile details up top, under the member content would be fine for me.

Sure, I may be able to cook up something that works with the widgets in a smarter manner.

In terms of the forum and blog information (latest) does that re-order based on provided comments.  I.e. if someone comes across a post not on the front page, say from a month ago, and comments, will that post then appear back on the front page?

It's purely based on creation date. Not last activity on that content date.

Verint (the platform we base the community on) does not surface details to allow that to happen. 'Activity' is a different widget entirely and something I'm still looking into. There's a raw 'activity' widget on  What's New on the element14 Community so you can see what that looks like right now.

Always happy to hear people's thoughts. Yes the 'what's new' page is one we want to surface a bit better, at the moment it's hidden away on the top mega menu under 'community hub'.

My feedback- I dont need to see all my own stats and achievements at the top of the splash screen all the time. I liked having those details available by clicking my avatar if I wanted to see them.

I think this is going to be polarising for people, and it's one that will have to 'cater to the lowest common denominator' for those not knowing they can do that. Especially when navigating on mobile, I assume you're using a laptop or desktop? where it's more hidden.

Nice job on the fresh appearance of the welcome page graphics.

I do like the scrolling banner of featured topics as before.

I often start my E14 day by looking at the postings list under the forum tab. The info on the new page is still there, its prettier, but not as concisely listed. Maybe I just need more face time with it.

Thanks for pointing to that page, I don't remember ever seeing it as it's not the "home page" that I get when typing "element" in the URL bar. I mean, usually, I never have deep links in my URL history, but rather root pages.

And, yes, I'm a creature of habit whose reactions may be "epidermic" when changes come my way.
