Could you recommend a beginner project for soldering practice or similar?

dear engineers

Hello I am a student interested in electronics, about aa year ago i decided to boost my interest by learning from youtube e.t.c . but since I have no friends ,neighbours or family that take my interests I never found someone to interact with. Now i finally found element 14 , although I know there are mostly engineers but I hope I might have a good time here.

So can any of you recommend a beginner project cause I am really trying to master soldering (although I have learned more )

    +1 to this. Even to this day I have a lot of fun buying and putting together soldering kits. It's good practice, a great way to spend an afternoon or two, and you get the satisfaction of having built something that works, even if it's a silly LED flasher. There's plenty of circuits in online stores and marketplaces; from extremely cheap and simple, to more complex and expensive, so you have a lot of options to start and eventually move into more and more complex projects.

  • Cheapest is to find some old non-functional electronic, that contains printed circuit boards. Ready made cheap practice. Unsokder the parts.

    In college were we given a board with terminal strips mounted. The terminal were labeled A,B,C. We were to create point to point wiring using the terminals as solder binding posts.

    connect AB, CD & EF, CD & EF are in parallel and in series with AB. Putting wires on and taking them off is great practice. Doesn't require a whole lot of gear to make work.

  • It really depends what sort of soldering you're aiming to learn. If you're just starting out, the through-hole based kits (mostly LED flashers, cubes, clocks) are a good start. If you'd like something more practical, there are FM bugs, volume meters, amplifiers, metal detectors and more. If you want to get into a little more sophistication with fiddly surface-mount stuff, there are SMD challenge kits. There are radio kits that have a mixture of technologies, although many don't have the best quality instructions.

    It's probably better to look at your most popular Chinese marketplaces for low-cost kits to start with. There's usually a range of kits to choose from.

  • Hey  , welcome to the element14 Community, sorry to hear that your local community doesn't have the support you're looking for, sometimes we have to be the fore-runners and start these things up ourselves which is no small feat.

    There's practising soldering and there's soldering projects, you can usually find online "solder practice kit" when you search for it and they're relatively affordable and they're a good start, some of them are seasonal, like an LED Christmas Tree or a small 'badge', I'd be tempted to look at ebay or other online stores depending on what's available near where you live.

    Have a look around the groups, there's a 'mega menu' at the top of the page, though it may be a little hidden if you're on a mobile device, you can browse projects, quizzes and other essentials courses that should guide you along and don't be shy to jump in with a comment or reply on any thread or blog.
