What should we run as the next 'Design Challenge Competition' ? Give us your suggestions!

Hey everyone,

What should we run as the next Design Challenge using Raspberry Pi?

There have been a number of these competitions over the years, ideally resulting in a prototype that could go to production - though some are, frankly, just for fun at demonstrating the products that we sell. Still, we want something that invites you to create something either with products you have or products we give you to make a project that ideally makes a difference.

We're looking for Raspberry Pi Design Challenge ideas this time. We've had a few of these in the past:

Pi Chef Design Challenge

Bluetooth Unleashed Design Challenge

Pi IoT

Sci Fi Your Pi

Forget Me Not Design Challenge

Rocking Raspberry Pi

Pi NoIR and Catch Santa Challenge

After some suggestions have been made we may have a poll to choose the one we go with image and you'll probably get a badge for helping out image

How about an RPi SDR project challenge? There are a lot of applications where SDR can be used for downloading data and up loading data. You can do radio astronomy, download satellite images, upload weather…

I too was thinking along the similar lines to ntewinkel point 2: a CNC challenge. The selected challengers would be given a pack with 3-4 stepper motors, a RPi and suitable shield. They could use this…

I can't guarantee that I'll have time to participate, but here are a few projects that have been on my to-do wish-list for quite a while, that might involve a Raspberry Pi: 1. RPi with a robot arm. My…

I’ll second BigG  ... an AI Raspberry Pi challenge will be great ... there are more platforms where predefined libraries (MATLAB - https://in.mathworks.com/solutions/machine-learning.html ) and Machine Learning models (AWS ML - https://aws.amazon.com/machine-learning/ ) are available already which we can easily integrate into our projects. What’s more? Python scripts can be used to create a Machine Learning model of your own (Python is preinstalled in Raspbian OS).

You can use Raspberry Pi with MATLAB - https://in.mathworks.com/discovery/raspberry-pi-programming-matlab-simulink.html  So a Raspberry Pi with MATLAB license bundle will be a great kit for this. If you add some sensors to the kit like temperature sensor, pressure sensor then this can become an IoT AI RPi (IAR) challenge.

Wow most of what you have said are on my To-Do list too ntewinkel

I just googled and could find some projects for the topics you had mentioned which can be referenced (but I have not tested these myself),

    1.  RPi Robot Arm - https://youtu.be/bL8fScdBOos

    2. RPi Control CNC - as you say 3D printers can be made out of it plus white board drawing robots - https://youtu.be/jYue-6A1xE4

3 RPi to replace cloud services - when I search I come across something named Open Source Own cloud - https://www.techradar.com/how-to/computing/how-to-set-up-a-raspberry-pi-powered-cloud-service-1316017

14rhb I will surely apply for this design challenge (if they conduct) as I wanted to create my own 3D printer for a long time.

Woww.... these are all very great ideas... Adding to the pool list, I would like to suggest a Design challenge topic where Raspberry Pi can be used as a security device. When I refer to security, it is general and can involve Home security, industrial security, device security, automobile security etc. So this will be challenging as well as allows us to think beyond the box to make the best security application using a raspberry pi.

cstanton, I do support the idea of jissdeodates. This idea is really cool as its a broader topic and participants can choose their specific area giving flexibility to the challenge. Hoping to use Raspberry Pi again in one of these cool challenges. image

    image thanks Nico,

My idea probably needs a big Element14 health and safety caveat along the lines of 'no responsibility is accepted for injury during the challenge or from those attempting to replicate any challenge idea....'

Especially as I was wondering if the RPi could adjust the angles to feed an axe head into a bench grinder to get the perfect edge. What could possibly go wrong ?

This thread is going to serve enough Rpi design challenges for the near future. Great ideas !

Olala, that's a difficult one - for the powerplayers. Is the datasheet of the processor available without NDA?
