My Robot Army

Recently, after suffering some withdrawal symptoms caused by insufficient robot building activity I was perusing a well know shopping site when I happened upon a humanoid robot toy at a very reasonable price of just over £8.

With free delivery it seemed worth a punt so I bought two. I always try to buy two if possible, one to play with and one to take apart. The robot contains a 600mA 3.7V Lipo battery  plus an IR handheld controller, with 18 LEDs for the eyes as well as two motors and robot looking shell casing, so good for disassembly and converting into other robot thingys.

I have always wanted to do some synchronised robot dancing/actions so this seemed a good opportunity to get started with.

These first two robots were so good I decided to get two more - which were on offer at just over £6 (sadly this offer has now ended or I might have bought some more) so when they arrive I will have the beginnings of a small robot army. They do have some drawbacks as they only really work well on smooth surfaces so carpets are a problem and they require a person to plug them in to recharge, but I feel with  bit of jiggery-pokery these problems can be overcome. All I will need then is Skynet and a time travelling machine and the world will be mine!

Nice addition to your army. Are you adding on to your house in order to have enough room for the barracks?

    James,

They do take up a bit of bench space. I could really do with more desk space. I do have another desk in my office but it always seemed to be filled up with other stuff being a perfect example of the flat surface law which states "Any flat surface will attract non-essential items until there is no longer any flat surface".

    James,

I hadn't really noticed that before. They are not that 'smart' although with a bit of clever programming they could easily be much smarter. I'm never sure why these toy companies do not maximise the computing technology they put into these robots as they must be capable of much more than they do, even with the existing construction, such as environment exploring, interacting with another similar robot (seems a good way to sell two instead of one) and so on. Maybe they keep these ideas for more expensive robots.

    John,

Ummm. Not sure she would be keen on the garage idea. Perhaps she would prefer the shed - more fresh air.

    Gene,

At present there is no need to expand the house, I just made my children leave home instead. Now we have lots of rooms. Sadly, my wife decided we had to spend a lot of my pension on decorating the vacant rooms, limiting the financing of the robot army.

PS She doesn't really know that I have six (or is it seven) more robots under a desk, waiting for assembly.
