openPicus Flyport WIFI

2 Feb 2012

I have tried to develop an application using the MRF24WB0MA Wifi module from Microchip. I had no problem building a board, however, I had huge problems unravelling code for the TCP/IP stack.

All code provided by Microchip is intended to be used in conjunction with the relevant daughter boards, and development kits, such as the PIC18 Explorer kit. After looking on the internet for some sample code, or a similar project that I could adapt, I found openPicus Flyport!

I could not afford to purchase a Flyport Wifi module for myself, and had all components needed to create one, schematics are freely available for download. Therefore I have attempted to build one myself.

This blog will contain details on the build of a prototype and relevant test and development notes.

I have fixed the printing problem, so the circuit could now be completed. I have purchased a lot of 47 sheets of HP Premium Inkjet transparencies on Ebay. The difference in finish between the HP and previously…

I have managed to design a circuit using EAGLE, which took some time, as I have to design the board so that it is possible to manufacture in my workshop.

I use a home made UV exposure unit (4 small strip tubes in a box), and a transparencies printed off a Canon MP270 Inkjet. For a double sided board I print bottom layer, and top layer, overlay precisely, and stick them together at the top.

The photo resist board is then sandwiched between the bottom, and top layer transparency, and also between 2 pieces of glass to hold it all in place.

It is then exposed for 1 minute and 30 seconds each side. The photo resist is removed with universal developer from RS, and the board is etched in a bubble etch tank for approx 10 minutes using Fe-C13 (Ferric Chloride).

Only this time I failed, and gave up after the 3rd attempt, I could not get enough resolution out of my inkjet to keep the 0.02mm spaces between the 0.025mm pins clear, therefore the result was either over etched and broken 0.025mm traces from the PIC, or all pins joined together as a single block.

Therefore, I have sent the layouts to a digital printer, he said he would send me a sample of my layout printed on acetetate on his machine, and if it works for me, he has a customer for sure!

If not I would have to have the board made elsewhere, and as it is just a prototype at this stage, hardly worth the cost!

    Fingers crossed!

Very interesting project.  I was working on an WiFi project last year and had a tough time finding robust Arduino libraries for the 2 modules I tried: MRF24WB0MA and Roving Networks RN-131C.  I didn't mind switching architectures and Flyport looked like a promising solution, but no Linux support was bummer for me.

Look forward to reading your progress.

    Cheers,

    Drew
