Happy Birthday, element14!

The Best Thing to Ever Happen to June 14th. image

So, in the style of our Raspberry Pi celebration, I was going to kick-off this post talking about other really cool things that happened on June 14th. However, after looking at the Wikipedia Page dedicated to this date... I was honestly coming up a bit short. Yes, things happened, but a lot of them weren't great. For example, Albert II became the first monkey in space... before dying on impact. Yikes. So instead, myself and decided that element14 is probably the best thing to ever happen on June 14th. Go us!

 

Happy "First" Birthday!

And while this is the eighth birthday for the community, this is a "first" for a couple members of the element14 team, so wanted to give a quick shout out to , Mindi and of course... yours truly (though it's a bit depressing to wish "happy birthday" to oneself). But I digress. Here's to a happy "first birthday" to the newest members of the element14 team, and what will hopefully be many more years to come.

 

Birthday Presents! image

To help commemorate the occasion, every member who logs in between now and June 28th, 12PM CDT will receive the "element14 8th Birthday Badge". This is a limited time only badge, and once the day and time has passed you will no longer be able to receive it (even if you ask really, really nicely). In addition to this, we'll be giving away eight birthday presents to various members of the community. You heard (read) that correctly - we'll be giving presents to you!

 

How to Win

Comment below with where you were or what you were doing when the element14 community launched. While some of you were probably diligently working to ensure a smooth and successful launch (looking at you, ), many of us didn't join until weeks, months or years later. We'll choose eight members who reply, and send them their choice of the following presents:

 

For example: On June 14th, 2009 I was likely celebrating the finish of Finals Week at my University. Since DePaul is on a quarter system, we generally went a bit latter into the year than other schools, with Finals Week usually the first or second week of June. And by celebrating, I was probably catching up after a few all nighters and trying really, really, really hard to not stress about my pending grades (I graduated with a 3.445, so I think I did fairly well, even if I missed *** Laude by .005).

  • Checking my emails, on June 14th 2009, I ordered Battlefield Earth off amazon. That was the high(low) point of a terrible-movie-marathon.

     

    Life has improved considerably since then...

  • On June 14, 2009, I was likely enrolling in summer classes pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. I never did finish that degree, but a lot has changed since then. That summer semester would be my final semester at my local community college. Since then I enlisted in the Navy and spent a little over six years on active duty, I've finished my AA in General Studies in a year while in the military, I have since separated and started pursuing my BSE in Electrical Systems Engineering at Arizona State University. I'm new to the community and I'm enjoying using things that I've learned in the past, both with electrical systems and coding, and applying them to the world of electronics and microcontrollers.

  • June 14, 2009 I just moved to 3rd semster of my bachelor school. My bachelor's is in Electronics and Comm Engg, and June 10, 2009 my 3rd semster classes started. On 11th June 2009, my first electronics lab happened and from that moment, electronics became part of my life. June 14th comes on the weekend. That staturday, I went out to buy my own very first breadboard, leds, caps, resisters and connecting wires along with a wire striper.  And on June 14th 2009, a beautiful sunday, my first date with electronics happened image. And ever since, it stayed with me, after my college, at my first job, then again in my seconds college.. image

    Although it took my another 4 years to know about e14, I'm proud of being a part of this family now.

  • I joined Element 14 on RasPi launch day 29 Feb 2012 when the official RasPi site was locked down to prevent it from crashing.  At that point Element14 was the best place to talk about RasPi.  Even after RasPi came back on line I preferred element14 since certain topics were verboten chez RasPi.

     

    On 14 June 2009 I was still playing with my BeagleBoard, RasPi's older and more robust cousin.  Unlike RasPi, BeagleBoard/Bone are open source hardware so if there are issues you can track them down from schematics and PCB layouts instead of having to reverse-engineer.

     

    Later in 2009 I discovered the new Cypress PSoC 5 (Programmable System on Chip) that includes an ARM Cortex-M3, memory, digital devices, analog devices, and programmable logic, all on one chip.  The expensive PSoC 5 has been supplemented with the significantly cheaper PSoC 4 (Cortex-M0), which is a very nice chip.  The only problem I have with PSoC 4 and 5 is that the documentation is incomplete so you pretty much have to use their Windows-based design software.  That's OK for a lot of people, but those who prefer to use GNU/Linux or something else as a development environment are mostly out of luck... for now.

     

    Message to element14 team:  I have more boards than I have time for, so please don't include me in the birthday present drawing.

    weird that this all started on a Sunday. For me Sunday is a day of rest, going to church and join the family.

    In the week before on June 9, 2009, we had our team trip to Rotterdam. Where we cycled trough the city.
