Happy Birthday, element14!

The Best Thing to Ever Happen to June 14th. image

So, in the style of our Raspberry Pi celebration, I was going to kick-off this post talking about other really cool things that happened on June 14th. However, after looking at the Wikipedia Page dedicated to this date... I was honestly coming up a bit short. Yes, things happened, but a lot of them weren't great. For example, Albert II became the first monkey in space... before dying on impact. Yikes. So instead, myself and decided that element14 is probably the best thing to ever happen on June 14th. Go us!

 

Happy "First" Birthday!

And while this is the eighth birthday for the community, this is a "first" for a couple members of the element14 team, so wanted to give a quick shout out to , Mindi and of course... yours truly (though it's a bit depressing to wish "happy birthday" to oneself). But I digress. Here's to a happy "first birthday" to the newest members of the element14 team, and what will hopefully be many more years to come.

 

Birthday Presents! image

To help commemorate the occasion, every member who logs in between now and June 28th, 12PM CDT will receive the "element14 8th Birthday Badge". This is a limited time only badge, and once the day and time has passed you will no longer be able to receive it (even if you ask really, really nicely). In addition to this, we'll be giving away eight birthday presents to various members of the community. You heard (read) that correctly - we'll be giving presents to you!

 

How to Win

Comment below with where you were or what you were doing when the element14 community launched. While some of you were probably diligently working to ensure a smooth and successful launch (looking at you, ), many of us didn't join until weeks, months or years later. We'll choose eight members who reply, and send them their choice of the following presents:

 

For example: On June 14th, 2009 I was likely celebrating the finish of Finals Week at my University. Since DePaul is on a quarter system, we generally went a bit latter into the year than other schools, with Finals Week usually the first or second week of June. And by celebrating, I was probably catching up after a few all nighters and trying really, really, really hard to not stress about my pending grades (I graduated with a 3.445, so I think I did fairly well, even if I missed *** Laude by .005).

 

You have until June 30th, 11:59AM (noon) CDT to enter.

  • I was a graduate student, so I was definitely in school for the summer term. I was likely gluing fiber optic cable to something...

  • I was still in school studying for midterms... Oh those were fun. If only everyday had thinking involved like I did back then.

  • Before the days over I just wanted to say thank you for being a part of the community.

     

    To have something like this exist, that brings so many amazing people together, it's really what motivates us to put our best effort forward in keeping this going.

     

    The joy of working in the community has been interacting with the members because you're the ones that come up with the best ideas, you're the ones that make this community special.

     

    In 2009, I was working for a PHP web development company with 7 other people total.   It was a lot of work, you had to wear many hats, but at the end of the day you had the feeling that what you did had an impact and you were making a difference.

     

    Being a part of this community feels very similar, it's a small but close group, and you're asked to put your best effort forward because your performance impacts everyone else on the team.

     

    That's the thing that I've appreciated most about my opportunity to work as a part of the community.

     

    Its a lot of work but it feels worth it because it's another opportunity to make a difference and it feels like what we're doing is keeping alive something that's very special.

     

    Cheers to the person who came up with idea for forming this community!

     

    The fact that there are so many amazing people on here tells me that someone knew what they were doing.

    2009 is too far back to be certain.

     

    My profile suggests I joined in 2012.

    I was aware of element14 as I was buying parts while they were Farnell, but not the community.

  • That was before retirement and if it was a Sunday I was probably busy preparing for a busy Monday.

  • Hmmm...  Bit of a stretch for the memory banks, but as someone commented that June 14th, 2009 would have been a Sunday I would have likely been in the booth at our Church doing my usual A/V tech thing.  After that, either having a quiet afternoon with the wife or if she was not so inclined in the workshop on any of a number of various projects from the magical list which never seems to grow shorter no matter how many projects are completed, abandoned, re-scheduled, or re-purposed.

     

    Funny how that works, eh?

    On June 14th, 2009 I was likely thinking about my future. Summer exam term was ending on FEE and I hadn't finished all the exams. I knew I need to create another plan or find myself a job. I gave up on electronics and thought that it is a domain just for the people who know all the physics and mathematics behind it, which I failed to learn at the university. However, I still have 2 good friends from that time and am grateful for that.

    BTW I haven't heard about element14 until about 2 years later. Now I am happy to be here.

    Gosh that's a long time for my memory recall !!!!!   Let's see:

    No Email in the archive

    No entries in Facebook

    No calendar entries but lets see what else happened in 2009

    I knew nothing of the creation and existence of this wonderful community.  At that time I was employed as Technical Support Manager for just over 8 years but trouble was looming caused by the banking crisis and by September the company I worked for went into administration and I was made redundant, at 55 nobody wants you, it's illegal in the UK to discriminate against age but that doesn't stop them.   A year later, after doing some consultancy work and not finding permanent employment, I took early retirement. BEST THING I EVER DID image image image   Electronics, Software and all the technical things I love became my hobby, I found Element14 and we all live happily ever after.
