Celebrate the Year of the Dog with element14!

Another year, another turn of the Lunar Calendar. As we've done in years past, we'd like to spend some time, celebrating the Chinese New Year (and of course, have a limited time badge you can earn). 2018 is the Year of the Dog, the faithful furry friend who have stood by our side from (almost) the very beginning.

 

Pack Instincts

According to the Chinese Zodiac (and to no surprise to anyone who has owned a canine companion), people born in the Year of the Dog are known for their loyal, honest personalities. Of course, these valiant hearts can often be emotional, and their lively and courageous spirits make them one of the more stubborn signs. Their lucky numbers are 3, 4, and 9, and they win 'best in show' with their lucky colors red, green, and purple.

 

Canine Companions

Considered to be one of the first species to be domesticated, dogs have served as companions for humanity for millennia, selectively bread to look and behave as the perfect four-legged friend. Archaeological records show that the first undisputed dog remains buried besides humans dates back almost 14,7000 years (though other, disputed remains have been traced back to over 36,000 years ago). These dates imply that the earliest canine companion accompanied our hunter-gather ancestors, and have stood by our side ever since. To this day, they fulfill many duties besides simple friendship, including hunting, herding, protection, law enforcement, and even therapeutic roles.

 

Man's Best Friend

Whether your a cat, dog, bird and scale person, it's easy to see how dog's have earned the sobriquet 'man's best friend'. And while we'd like to celebrate canines on the community, I have it on good authority that most of our members are actually primates. How unfortunate for the dog lovers among us. However, the element14 community is for and a celebration of our members, so we'll throw you a bone on this one.   • I agree, picking favourites will lead to fights and then that's how civilization falls and it'll take thousands of years of dark ages to get back to where we are again. I can't go that long without Internet or toilet paper.

     

    Suffice it to say, there are quite a handful of people here who I'd be more than happy to share a beverage-of-choice with any day of the week!

  • Like children, it doesn't pay to have a favourite (unless you only have one).

    I was lucky enough to visit England in 2015 and meet a number of community members, inc some that are behind the scenes so to speak.

     

    As per the community they were extremely hospitable (thanks and ) as well going out of their way to show this NZ'er a good time ( and the others at Leeds)

     

    I've also conversed with a large number of others across the world, so picking a favourite is not possible.

  • Hmmm, best friend is a tough one as I have made many friends around the world.

     

    I would probably have to chose Monte Chang in Sydney, Australia.

     

    He and I have conversed often off line on many topics.

  • I also think that element14 is incredible due to the diversity of members with similar job and/or a hobby. Everyone has a different history and experience, works or resides at a different place on Earth and has different people and supplies around him/her. Here is a place we can all virtually meet, even if we can't find others with the same interests in our home town.

  • It has been very difficult for me to find others with similar interests in my home area. This wonderful forum has provided a lot of new friends with similar interests and enthusiasm for learning and electronics. I disagree with   about being included in the group. I think that I can speak for everyone on the list that everyone belongs from the first day that they post a contribution to the forum or ask a well presented and supported question on the forum. We have a vast range of technical skill and experience here which is shared for the benefit of all. While there is a points systems in place I can very quickly recognize and respect those who have skills and experience levels that make their points level irrelevant. It is often difficult to come on a new site and face the entrenched residents. I believe that this site does everything possible to minimize the transition from Newbie (I hate this term) to respected member. I can only hope that the fine people who sponsor this site will continue to support it for our benefit. Thank You Newark Electronics and element 14.
