What is the Main Deterrent to Participation?

There are lots of reasons why members participate in Road Tests and Design Challenges and there are lots of reasons why they don't.

This poll explores what seem to be the main deterrents. What is the main reason you do not participate?

Or if you participate in some, why not more?

I'd like to add something. I've seen a few people talk about lack of confidence, maybe I'm not the right person, maybe there are better people, etc. I'm an author, I've written (in my name) two technical…

I stopped entering design competitions when I see some of the "Top Members" have applied That should not be a motivation to NOT enter. I was fortunate to talk with Christian DeFeo while I was in England…

You set a great example for other members. It would be fun to see you teamed up with a mentee on a project...

I think we can all relate to these sentiments. I hope you eventually find ways to participate - it can be a good investment in your career as well as an interesting hobby.

My main skills are in mentoring and encouraging others, so I focus on those activities.

Practice helps - I learn a lot from writing proposals, even when they are not successful. I also find that when they are successful, I have more incentive to complete them than I do with solitary projects, partly because there are are more motives/rewards than just getting it working. I hope to see you in the winners circle at some point...

I picked other. As a Student I would love to participate but do not always have the time and would hate to commit to a project and not have time to finish or further develop my project.

At my current level of experience I feel it would be a waste of time and money (from the standpoint of element 14) to consider any proposal I could put forward.

There are far more worthy recipients for the (sometimes rather expensive) tech on offer, so that's why I currently rule myself out.

One day I'll get there, but you still have to bear in mind, I rarely get around to finishing anyth

I picked "Other" because there are so many factors involved.

    1) Is the challenge about something I'm interested in.

    2) How many hours will I need to spend on the project to complete it.

    3) Do I have the required "extra stuff" to work with the project "kit"

    4) Is the final product something I can use after the challenge is over.

    5) How many other projects are in the pipeline.......

I deleted my entry for the Safe & Sound Design Challenge so I can work on the Intel Edison greenhouse control project when the parts arrive.

I'm glad the manufacturers sponsor these Road Tests and Challenges, it's one of the best ways to keep up with new tech.  I try and get my students involved when possible, however Design Challenge timing never seem to line up with class schedules and course term dates.
