As my other astute colleagues have indicated, I use paper and pencil, or a computer to layout and organize my ideas more than anything else. For building, testing and troubleshooting I refer back to this regularly.
Browser. Looking for data sheets and candidate components it has replaced catalogs and databooks. Also for identifying parts in store that i have forgotten the details on.
It's a philosophical question! If I had to choose one I'd select "Text Editor" from the list above, because it symbolises a triptych of uses from "reading and studying text" to "collecting your ideas and thoughts" and the action of "typing up code", i.e. you have to eventually implement stuff too. So, the text editor it has to be!
Agreed Selsinork, except I think that most erosion is still due to abuse. Lots of new tips claim to be resistant to the new brew, then again you can still get leaded solder for hand work which I suppose is ok for prototypes or where ROSH isn't an issue
