Help me make my own "starter kit"

Hi'.

 

I'm new to this board, so I'm sorry, if this has been requested thousands of times. I find this site a little confusing.

 

So, I wanna start some experimenting with automation of mechanic, hydraulics and building cnc-machines (routers, lathes, 3d-printer and other robots).

 

 

The beginner kits available seems to target a wide group of arduino-users. It looks like a lot of the things, I'd get would end up collecting dust.

 

So what do I need?

 

It looks to me like I'd need:

Some kind of arduino board

3-4 stepper motors

1 stepper-shield per motor.

 

But is that all?

 

I have various components, from when I used to make tube amps and effect pedals for guitar. So smaller things like jumpers, potentiometers and bread board is already there.

    Hi billabott, I didn't realize that stepper motors would need pwm. The reference and tutorial don't mention the need for pwm to run stepper motors and the tutorial also uses a non-pwm pin. Am I missing…

    Um if you are playing around with small robots you may well invest in a handfull of Servo motors rather than steppers since they are cheaper and obviously have feedback in them and more commonly used in Robotics. The Steppers I assume are for the 3D printer??

    I would therefore suggest you look into an existing design before puchacing any as they can be quite expensive for anything of suitable size.

    O yes nearly forgot you can easily drive 6 or more Servos from an Arduino  without resort to fancy shields etc.

     

    Also take a look at some of the kits that Farnell do or those on EBAY and see if some thing "cool" resonates with  you and maybe get one of them!

    To my knowledge, steppers would be more suitet for my needs.

    I'd like to (one day) build a CNC-plasma cutter.

     

    I can't really find any kits at the Farnell store, that covers my needs. To be honest, it just looks like a waste of money, cause the things I need isn't in the kit, and what's in the kit, I won't needimage

     

    But any thoughts and ideas are welcome.

    Surely a kit from this store or any other is ment to be educational or at least get you a "potted" scalled solution so you can work out what you really need to implement your project.

    If you need to ask the group then maybe you are n some way undecided therefore it nice to play with smaller devices at better prices and maybe less problems such as power handling etc. you play with them and gain ann insight to what your problem is about then you buy what you think you need.

    In fact you may run though this several times collecting a range of kit parts many of which are indeed a waste but you have gained knowledge which is much more important. 

     

    As you can imagine making a CNC device combines machining knowledge with nechanical electronic and software skills. It's hard to imagine jumping over all these successfully in one jump. Expect to fail and buy many more toys than is optimal image

    This is all about learning, and is sure was going to start out with small steps.

    The first goal is just to get some motors to move the way I want them to. Nothing more. Once I know how to code and such, I'll start to build something small - maybe a 3D printer. But it doesn't change the fact, that there's no beginners kit for this on the farnell site.

     

    When it comes to larger things and mechanics, I don't have any problems. I work in an engineering company, and build anything out steel, stainless, aluminum and even Teflon or polycarbonate. And I have heavy machinery available.

     

    What's going to fail is my electronics and coding image

    I would consider getting some of those very small stepper motors and controllers for  <£5 ea on Ebay 

    With the controllers and a seperate PSU for the motors you should be able to drive at least 3 of them with out too much difficulty.

     

    The reason I'm suggesting the small motors which would obviously not be suitable for a heavy CNC is that you can easily power them and mistakes arn't normally espensive and dangerous... get the general idea of the electronics sorted then the SW then you can re implement with bigger steppers and controllers for the real deal thus saving you money overall and development time etc!!

     

     

    BTW the Baby Roland modella CNC has these little motors !

    What is SW short for?

    When working with very small steppers or servos, and a separate power supply, I'd still need some shields , right?
