Arduino door lock for school locker

Former Member

Hi everybody my name is Nathan Weber and I would like to ask a few questions:

I would firstly like to ask how could I make an Arduino powered door lock for my school locker because I always feel like someone or something is stealing stuff from my locker.I was thinking that I should either use an rfid tag, keypad or fingerprint scanner. What would be better and how should I go about it.

The RFID tag and fingerprint scanner are cool devices, but I'd pick a keypad. It's simple to interface, without needing any shields or special libraries, and you don't need to worry about losing a keytag or having a scanner fail. Code for such a system wouldn't be complex, basically just making sure the entered code is valid and then operating a latch solenoid. You could easily add features to enhance security, such as a delay time if the wrong code is entered twice, for instance. Maybe different codes for the day of the week, or even morning and afternoon. With minimal hardware, the keypad system could be powered by a gel-cell battery with good capacity, since you probably don't have AC mains power in your locker. (The biggest problem I think you'll have is with your school administrators, though, since they usually don't approve of modifications to their property. Some schools also have a policy that you have no expectation of privacy, and that they can enter your locker at any time. If your system keeps them out they won't be happy.) Sounds like an interesting project. Good luck, and let us know what you wind up doing!
