Update: Change in RoadTest Applications

Anyone who has followed the RoadTests group is probably aware of my challenges in getting applicants to submit complete applications. My specific challenge is those writing "single-sentence" applications. Given the fact that recently, I have had a roadtest where over 50% were single-sentence applications, I decided to implement a new policy.

 

When you click to enroll in a roadtest, and the official application form opens up, you will see the following message in the comments section of the application form:

Stop and Read the Directions.

 

Please answer the following questions:

 

(a) What is your background?

(b) Why you are applying for this roadtest?

(c) What is your testing procedure?

(d) Give some examples of your element14 community participation

(e) Please verify that you can complete the testing and review writing on element14 within 60 days from the receipt of the product.

 

Single-sentence applications are incomplete and will not be eligible for winning the FREE product.

To submit a complete application, you must answer the five questions cited above. If you do not, your application is incomplete and will be ineligible for winning the FREE product.

 

The good news is that there will be better quality applications and likely few applicants overall, hence, less competition for winning.

    If you go back to the RoadTest homepage, you will be able to look down the right hand side at the list of RoadTests. If you have successfully applied for a RoadTest, you should have an 'Unenroll' button. If the application is just saved but not submitted you should seen an 'Edit Draft' button.

    So from the above you can see that I have applied to the Arduino Engineering Kit but am still in the process of applying for the Keithley Bench Multimeter.

    The form should submit. If it doesn't - check if you have any privacy enhancing extension, script blockers etc running. Furthermore, check that you haven't missed filling in key details (e.g. red text indicating missing information).

     

    As mentions - if your submission is successful, the "enrol" button will change to "unenroll".

  • I would suggest revising the commentary to remove the words FREE product.

     

    The word FREE is an attractant like a gut wagon to maggots. If you have ever participated in an event that provides FREE hotdogs and run out of hotdog you realize FREE has a value. It is a attitude of loss, if not obtained. The perception can be difficult to change. Especially to those who didn't get a hotdog.

     

    My suggestion:

    Original

    Replacement

    Single-sentence applications are incomplete and will not be eligible for participation in the build.

     

    Original

    If you do not, your application is incomplete and will be ineligible for winning the FREE product.

    Replacement
