What Would Be Your Favorite Project Build with the Cypress PSoC 6 Pioneer Kit?

Hi RoadTesters!

I recently met with Cypress concerning their new PSoc 6 MCU product line. The company believes the PSoc 6 is a real winner for engineers developing IoT products. In conjunction with the PSoc 6, they've produced a BLE Pioneer Dev Kit, based on its new PSoC 6 dual-core MCU architecture,

Here's an Unboxing Video of the dev kit:

Here's a quick overview of the PSoc 6 MCU architecture:

What's unique about the PSoc 6 is that it bridges the gap between application processors and standard microcontrollers. It features:

  •     Dual-core ARMRegistered CortexRegistered-M4 and ARM CortexRegistered-M0+, running at 150-MHz and 100-MHz, ultra-low-power 40nm architecture
  •     Ultra-low-power design that consumes as little as 22-μA/MHz in active power mode1 and 4.5-μA in deep sleep modes
  •     Flexibility with wired and wireless connectivity options, software defined peripherals, and CapSenseRegistered
  •     Integrated, hardware-based Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) with secure data storage

Power

The PSoC 6 MCU architecture reduces energy consumption with:

  •     Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling enabling both performance- and power-critical processing
  •     Auxiliary core which can be used as an offload engine for power efficiency, allowing the main core to sleep
  •     Ultra-low-power system: 22-µA/MHz active (CortexRegistered-M4) and 15-µA/MHz active (CortexRegistered-M0+)

Dual-Core Architecture

The PSoC 6 has a flexible dual-core architecture to optimize system power consumption and performance. This architecture has two processors CM0+ and CM4 on the same die, with all the memory and peripherals available for use by both the cores. This adds a lot of value to the user who wants to set up a system where the processing load is shared by the two cores.

image

Security

The PSoC 6 provides secure, internal storage for firmware, applications and secure assets, including:

  •     Scalable secure memory for multiple, independent user-defined security policies,
  •     Cryptographic algorithms including elliptical-curve cryptography (ECC) and advanced encryption standard (AES) with integrated hardware coprocessors
  •     A specialized hardware block designed to offload compute-intensive tasks from the main processor

Are you Looking for a Device That's Built for the Internet of Things? Then Check out the PSoc 6!

Cypress believes that the PSoC 6 will serve as the catalyst for differentiated IoT devices because:

  •     Software-defined peripherals can be used to create custom analog front-ends (AFEs) or digital interfaces for innovative system components such as electronic-ink displays.
  •     Flexible wireless connectivity options, including fully integrated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5.0.
  •     CapSenseRegistered capacitive-sensing technology, enabling modern touch and gesture-based interfaces
  •     Support by Cypress's PSoC CreatorTm Integrated Design Environment (IDE) and the expansive ARM ecosystem.

Click here for some application examples.

If you are new to Cypress PSoC MCUs, click here for a glossary of key PSoC terms.

Before I offer a RoadTest on this product, I'm curious to learn what would be your favorite project builds with this kit? And why the PSoc 6 is a great fit for your idea. Thanks.

Please leave any comments below.

Sincerely,

Randall Scasny

Hi Randall, I am a big fan of the PSOC and this latest product would be very useful in helping me upgrade my controller for an old CNC kit I have. I am looking to do a computer controlled scanning microscope…

Overall lots of great ideas: upgrade controller for CNC kit a high end 3D printer a vehicle nanny that monitors, analyzes, diagnoses and reminds you of vehicle performance, health and maintenance schedules…

I agree that to fully test capability will involve some complexity. For me it's important to test the unique features of dual core. How exactly does this work and what can you get out of this package that…

I'm not familiar with SDR. Does it need the high resolution to give fine detail within signals of constant amplitude or is it because the overall amplitude varies considerably? If it's the latter, and given how fast the ADC is, couldn't you use a strategy where you have a PGA ahead of the ADC, take readings at different gains, and then take whichever set of readings give you the best resolution for a cycle without clipping?

sure, but it needs to be fast, and high resolution, (> 14 bit).

I had a quick look at the specs of the PSoC 6, and couldn't find a sigma delta ADC either, but it does have a audio subsystem which possibly can be used as input for SDR.

Doesn't seem right, but then again we give it to rich Americans who are in the country 12 days, so what's some semen among consenting adults.

    I can help with some.

to drink booze or grog,  ... stick to your xxxx lager it saves having to spell.

to wear Jandals or Thongs (but not both Jandals and a thong!),    ... keep your underwear inside your pants at all time.

have paua or abalone   ... either one needs to be prepared properly.

to go tramping or walkabout    .. we have hills and lots of trees we call bush. Stay home you'll only get lost.

to get something from the Dairy or Milk Bar   .. We powder our milk and send it overseas, what is left is more expensive than petrol.

to be educated at Varsity or Uni .... add Polytechs to that as they give the cheaper version of a degree.

to eat Tip-Top ice cream or Tip Top bread    ... don't be silly they are two different things.

Great deviation from Randalls original post ...

That's right but it's my Mum that's the Kiwi.  I don't even have to register my citizenship to get it.

I can get my NZ passport in a jiffy and visit you as a fellow Kiwi rather than a foreigner.

    Now I'm confused as to whether;

         to drink booze or grog,

to wear Jandals or Thongs (but not both Jandals and a thong!),

         have paua or abalone

         to go tramping or walkabout

to get something from the Dairy or Milk Bar

to be educated at Varsity or Uni

to eat Tip-Top ice cream or Tip Top bread

to analyse circuits with electron flow or positron flow

to calculate using mhos instead of siemens.

to use MRP or RRP policies  (maximum retail price or recommended retail price)

    What is not confusing is;

Apple (and seemingly Microsoft and Miele) having Minimum Retail Prices

    NZ citizen by decent

Haha..... NZ citizens are all decent, we send the others to Australia to live, and then you send them back ... it's like a bad version of gifting. image

I find it strange that someone born in Australia, with an Australian birth certificate, to an Australian mother, but because the father has NZ citizenship, you become a NZ citizen even though you never asked for it.

What's even better is that parlimentary system doesn't allow this 'dual citizenship', yet they do nothing to verify the person before letting them run the country.

AND then you have a female politician throwing her toys out the cot because someone asked about the law ... the one that was being broken (unknowingly).

    Cheers

    Mark

How about a giant fleet of autonomous Lamprey detectors to control their numbers?

You could use their slime to detect them.

Did you know that I'm a NZ citizen by descent? (Just like our Deputy Prime Minister!)

And I didin't even have to register for it.
