number two looks the best to me, it's busy but at least I can scan a whole lot of content in one page.
I can then dive into what catches my eye or head to my regular haunts.
Simple is good in it's place - navigation,a search engine etc , but I see this site as my electronics industry news.
Ever seen a news paper like option one ? I haven't

i like the side listing all other new stuffs with current activity ..!!so we can directly fetch with all new activities ..!!!
the simpler it is the better, that's why google is more used than yahoo, yahoo has lots of crap all over the place
I prefer #2 as info on one page no need to hunt thru multiple pages for info
I like design 2 because updates and information welcome me at the first page on Element14.
Design 1 is simpler but welcome banner could be smaller. All elements should be visible in browser without scrolling.
