Measuring capacitors in circuit

Andy Betts
Andy Betts over 7 years ago

Simple question really...... Is there an accurate way of measuring the capacitance of a non polarised capacitor whilst it's still in circuit??

I don't have a scope, but I do have a DMM and an ESR that tests resistors, transistors and capacitors.

Thanks in advance

Andy

Hi Andy, I used to cut traces and wires temporarily in order to isolate the part in question. It is only necessary to break the circuit on one side. After the test one just patches the break and moves…

Another way would be to remove it physically from the circuit (if possible) and then measure it and solder back a new one

The caps on those cards look like they are marked with values. If not, you can trace the circuit to determine which components are where.

    Hi John,

I can understand you saying that.... And in a perfect world i would. But these Russian pedals are a different animal. It's not at all unusual for them to work away from the Schematic and stuff a different value in. Therefore I'd like to see how close top the schematic it is.

    Hi Andy,

The only recourse will be to unsolder one end and take your measurements. Now I understand your question.

That's strange... But never mind. What do you think about Fluke 117 Digital and TACKLIFE DM01M? Which of them are better?

Well, the Fluke is about 7x the price of the Tacklife.

The Fluke will probably be working in 20 years time (I have two Fluke handheld DMMs at least that old - I haven't used  a modern hand held in all that time because they just keep going, no excuse to buy a new one image)

The Tacklife will probably not be working in 20 years time.

But the price difference is so huge that you need to decide for yourself which features you will use and if saving $150 or so is important.

There is a kernel of truth in your words. It seems that i don't need a such longest-running tool image

In one hand, it's sad to read that you can't get new one (you know, just to update your tools ), but, in other hand, it works and this is more important - you save your money for more important or just nice things
