Detection sensor for tungsten wires

Hi Guys, Any ideas on what sensor to get to detect the presence/absence of a tungsten wire with a diameter of 0.5mm?

You could apply a large voltage and current to it, if there is a tungsten wire then it will glow. But not for long.

A non-contact metal detector doesn't induce hazardous voltages. But what about feeding it through a ferrule that optically detects when no wire is in the hole?

How about a presence detection Hall Effect Proximity (reflective) sensor switch?

Alternative approaches:

Weight sensor on the spool so you know when it is depleted.

Some kind of counter / logic so you can estimate when the spool is getting low.
