Wireless Protocol II: Wi-Fi
The element14 Wi-Fi Essentials covers both FHSS and DSSS, along with Wi-Fi basics, including networks, topologies, CSMA, Wi-Fi version evolution, and security. This supplementary guide discusses some related components and development boards available for projects, prototyping, and system design.
Development Boards
The Cypress PSoC 6 WiFi-BT Pioneer Kit enables you to evaluate and develop applications using the PSoC 6 MCU, which is Cypress's latest, ultra-low-power PSoC, specifically designed for wearables and IoT products. It is a programmable embedded system-on-chip, integrating a 150-MHz Arm Cortex-M4 as the primary application processor, a 100-MHz Arm Cortex-M0+ that supports low-power operations, up to 1MB Flash and 288KB SRAM, CapSense touch-sensing, and programmable analog and digital peripherals.
The CYW954907AEVAL1F Evaluation Kit enables you to evaluate and develop single-chip Wi-Fi applications using CYW54907 devices. The Cypress CYW54907 embedded wireless system-on-a-chip (SoC) is well suited for IoT applications. It supports all rates specified in the IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac specifications. The device includes an ARM Cortex-based applications processor, a single stream IEEE 802.11ac MAC/baseband/radio, dual-band 5GHz and 2.4GHz transmit power amplifiers (PA), and receive low-noise amplifiers (LNA). It also supports optional antenna diversity for improved RF performance in difficult environments.
The CYW943907AEVAL1F EVK enables you to evaluate and develop single-chip Wi-Fi applications using CYW43907 devices. The Cypress CYW43907 embedded wireless system-on-a-chip (SoC) supports all rates specified in the IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n specifications. The device includes an Arm Cortex-based applications processor, a single stream IEEE 802.11n MAC/baseband/radio, a dual-band 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz transmit power amplifier (PA), and a receive low-noise amplifier (LNA).
Powered by Cypress CYW43362 the XPW100100K-01XPW100100K-01 is an Embedded Wireless Server that offers a flexible mobile-ready Wi-Fi solution for M2M and IoT applications. xPico Wi-Fi is a pin and form factor compatible member of the xPico family, providing low power, soft AP and simultaneous client mode, full IP and WLAN stacks. It is an extremely compact, low power networking solution that enables wireless LAN connectivity on virtually any solution with a SPI, USB (device or serial interface).
Components
Based on the Cypress CYW4343W, the Murata Type 1DX module is an ultra-small module that includes 2.4GHz WLAN and Bluetooth functionality. The module is very compact. Minimal external circuitry is required to complete a radio design; add an antenna, power source, clocks, processor, and associated interface hardware and the radio hardware design is complete. To ease Wi-Fi certification, the Type 1DX module complies with IEEE 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth Version 4.1 plus EDR, Power Class 1 (10dBm max) + BLE. Software is available for Linux and Android.
Based on Cypress's BCM43353, the Sterling-LWB5 is a high-performance 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WLAN and Bluetooth Smart Ready combo module. With an industrial temperature rating, broad country certifications, and the availability of two different package styles, the Sterling-LWB5 provides significant flexibility to meet various end user application needs. The module includes the MAC, Baseband and Radio to support WLAN applications and an independent, high-speed UART.
