Mushrooms' Paradise #15. Update on the Farm

The whole Mushrooms' Paradise blog

Here is a short update on the mushrooms' farm.

Unfortunately, the first batch of mushrooms died. I think my EnviroHAT was a bit defective and was showing humidity much higher than it really was.

My code used to check humidity and turn humidifier only if it is lower than needed. So I assume it was getting wrong readings and didn't run humidifier often enough.

Some mushrooms' cakes from the first batch did sprout but then all of them dried out.

Second batch is looking good so far. Cakes are sprouting. I decided to replace humidifier with repti-fogger - a special type of humidifier used for reptiles' terrariums. It has hoses that I can adjust to direct humidity to the exact areas where I need it. I also modified the code a little bit. Hopefully this batch will survive.

    Victoria,

This growing vegetables malarkey is a bit more difficult than it first seems. Are mushrooms a vegetable? I planted six cauliflowers last Autumn. One got rot, two were eaten by something (I still have not been able to work out what) and three are now flourishing but are not showing any sign of fruiting. I don't think I'll try them again. It's courgettes and French bean for me, plus a few potatoes.

I'm looking forward to hearing about the eventual harvest and consumption. Will they taste nice?

    Dubbie

    Hi Dubbie,

I love gardening! I And I have the same problem - animals eat roughly a third of my harvest. I have a garden and an orchard, but growing mushrooms is different. All this constant control of humidity and air flow is needed and it means constant monitoring. My goal is to eventually grow chicken-of-the-woods and boletes mushrooms, they are really delicious. But I still have to learn a lot.

P.S. I think your cauliflower will be fine. It doesn't require any pollination to grow a head. So if (hopefully) no one eats it  - it has no other choice but to fruit image
