The whole Mushrooms' Paradise blog
For vegetables part of the garden I chose lettuce and radishes, I explained the choice in Part #1 ( Mushrooms' Paradise #1 - Initial Plan | element14 | 1 Meter of Pi) of the blog.
The vegetable part of the garden will be at the bottom of the enclosure, in planters.
For Lettuce, after some research (for example, growing facts How to grow lettuce indoors? An easy step-by-step guide – Bulbo and growing instructions Growing Lettuce Indoors Year-Round ) I chose 2 varieties:
#1 - Black Seeded Simpson. It is one of the easiest sorts of lettuce to grow indoors. Additionally, it is a classic loose leaf variety, which is important for an enclosure with limited ventilation, like mine.
#2 - Parris Island Cos, which is also pretty easy to grow and one of the fastest growing varieties.
For Radishes (growing facts can be seen here How to Grow Radishes - Gardening Tips and Advice, Vegetable Seeds and Plants at Burpee.com, growing information is here How to grow radish indoors? An easy step-by-step guide – Bulbo) I chose 2 varieties as well:
#1 - Early Scarlet Globe, which has one of the fastest times to maturity.
#2 - Champion, It is of the smallest and best performing varieties, which is important in a limited space enclosure. Because these radishes will be on the smaller side I also planted them in 3 rows as an experiment. When I thin it out, I will use excess seedlings as microgreens.
Both of the crops will prefer 12 hours of light, so I will have an additional lighting for them, in their part of the enclosure.
Soil for both of the crops is a mix of 75% potting soil and 25% of vermiculite. I use vermiculite to retain moisture so I don’t need to water crops often.
I will need to thin out both crops, but I plan to use thinned parts as microgreens.
At the end of the project I will calculate calories and vitamins acquired using growing facts for both. Hopefully it will be sustainable. I have a problem with my enclosure, initially I miscalculated its size and it is too small and it is too late to make a new one. It is 263.17 cm3. So I plan to multiply my harvest yield by 3.8 at the end of the project to get correct data.
Planting was pretty straight forward. Create a mix, fill the planters, put seeds in, cover with a thin level of mix, water it.
