Energy harvesting; it's closing in on me!

Today while traversing the corridors of the University, I came across this sign:

It's a promotional sign for the nanotechnology lab of the University of Twente, apparently they're diving into the energy harvesting material science. Although probably not relevant to what they're actually doing, the demo is funny; you can light up each LED corresponding to the peltier tile:

No fancy processing needed here: behind each peltier, a small converter modul harvests the energy and powers the corresponding LED:

    Nice promotional demo board.

I agree, a nice dog and pony show, but I see a missed opportunity to do more with the collected energy than just making LEDs light up.

Now what would be really cool is to set it up with some solar collectors…

That would be interesting for energy harvesting as a whole subject; in this case this chair is investigating solely in nanomaterials for thermoelectric harvesting.

One word of warning: in this case 'nano' is not just a hyped up word. These guys 'n' gals are serious about nanoscale materials.

Now what would be really cool is to set it up with some solar collectors and the peltier sensors with a display showing how much energy was collected today.

That approach would get peoples attention about the potential.

    Just a thought,

    DAB
