IP rating details of the connector and the cable assembly

In the post below I would like to summarize my findings regarding IP parameters of  cable assembly  and  connector  with  enclosure mount .

IP rating specifies protection level against dust (first digit) and water ingress (second digit).

  • IP6x describe equipment that is "dust-tight", which means that even limited amounts of dust are prevented from entering,
  • IPx5 inform that equipment is protected against "water jets" - water projected in low-pressure jets from any direction will not have harmful effects (but limited ingress may happen),
  • IPx7 specifies that equipment is protected against temporary immersion in water (up to 1m for 30min),

First observation: 2209570116 1m cable assembly is specified as IP65/67 - which documentation  further specifies as P65 / IP67 (IN MATED CONDITION).

This feature is even more evident when PCB connector is examined. It is rated as IP67, but - as we can see on the photos below - enclosure mount is circular and a connector has a flat bottom side:

which is confirmed by the connector drawing from the datasheet:

and under the light it can be seen that there are free areas between mount and the connector which could allow for water ingress:

I have asked Molex customer support and got an answer in very quick time that has confirmed my suspicion - it is IP67 only when mated, which is stated at the last page of datasheet of the enclosure mount:

I think those observations could be useful for proper employment of these components in the outdoors environment.

I'm still wondering why did the connector's ring has a flat side instead of it being circular so that it would get a proper coupling with the rubber gasketSweat smile

I think that it is connected with the fact that it is PCB mounted: having flat bottom could make it easier to  install (or remove) PCB into the enclosure. I think that they also decided that it cannot be guaranteed to be properly (with enough force to make waterproof connection) pressed against the mount when whole PCB would need to be positioned and kept in this way for the whole lifetime of the product.
