About Me

I am a Software developer with B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and M.Sc. in Mechatronics. I do not have that much of electronics background and I have No academic education in electronics.

Therefore there is a very high probability that I am doing something obviously wrong. I would really appreciate if you find my mistakes and correct me.

I learned a lot just by myself and also by working in an startup in Germany. The startup was fun. It is called Nuwiel and it is growing now. I used Bosch BNO055 IMU at Nuwiel for mass

estimation of a motorized cart at a prototype level. That is my only experience with accelerometers. We also used bunch of analoge strain gauges to measure forces to proof that our prototype works.

Goal

TL;DR, my main goal is to study the vibration we are creating in our apartment when we are exercising indoor.

During the COVID-19 time my wife and I are exercising inside our apartment. The building is made of wooden structure and sometimes it vibrates a lot.

The main goal is to study the vibrations caused by our exercise. We try our best not to bother the neighbors but I think the noise of our exercising can

be annoying to the people who are living in the apartment below our apartment. So I would like to measure the vibration and find a threshold that we

should not exceed and In case of too much vibration, I should have a system to notify us, since sometimes we do not notice we are too noisy.

The following image is the horizontal mirror of our apartment's floor plan. (I could only find this mirrored one from our landlord's website)

We usually exercise in front of the TV (between living and dining area in the image below) which is probably creating the highest level
of vibrations. For very jumpy ones, we found out that near the kitchen, between the counter and the bedroom entrance, is the best place to exercise.

Plan

  1. Learn about the Nucleo board, I have worked with the famous STM32F4DISCOVERY board before. So I hope learning Nucleo should not be that much hard
  2. Learn about the vibration sensor.
  3. Start some basic measurements and find out if this sensor can measure this kind of vibration or if I need extra amplifier.
  4. We have a carpet floor which probably makes the vibration measurement harder. So I probably need to design and 3d print a sharply-legged mount for the sensor that would somehow reduce the effect of carpet.
  5. Learn about the Bluetooth module and IFTTT or any other notification system.
  6. Do different measurements in different location of the apartment and study what is going on. From here, the work would be gathering of more data and try to make a meaning out of data.

Update

I just ordered the following items in US to handle the very small connector of the sensor, Let's hope it is going to work:

  • SM03B-SRSS-TB(LF)(SN)

  • BM03B-SRSS-TB(LF)(SN)

  • SMD to DIP adapter 1.0mm pitch (FPC100P010)

Some alternative adapters that you may prefer:

  • Adafruit Multi-pitch FPC Adapter - 40 Pin 0.5/0.6/0.7/0.8/1.0mm

  • Adafruit FPC Stick - 20 Pin 0.5mm/1.0mm Pitch Adapter
