10 Red LED chaser modules

Question

i am thinking of making some LED modules that contain 10 LEDs in it and have connections on either end to increase the number of :LEDs and a 2*5 header to connect to a Arduino Mega 2560 or raspberry PI micro controller.

Was going with 8 , but cant get a 2*4 Female Header

Total number of LEDs? Frequency of the change required? I'm also reminded of the way the NeoPixels work, those are a bit like a shift register too. The signal is send out with that counter representing the position in the change, each time it goes through a pixel that counter is decremented and then one it's zero then the data is passed to that pixel

Why not ? I have the same question. You can chain shift registers together so that the output of one is the input of the next. The software just has to push the extra bits out to cover the extra registers. OpenSprinkler does that for their sprinkler zones. (for details, look at the circuit diagram for their expansion units).

ps, It will probably be easier to have each module include a multiple of 8 LEDs, as that matches what a shift register or decoder can handle. I suppose another idea is to use a small microcontroller in each module - ATTiny chips are very inexpensive. Use some pins for input, some for output. The input takes information from the source, or the previous module, and the output sends a (slightly modified) copy of the input on to the next module. A basic serial connection would probably work. Then you could do what Andy said about neopixels to make them individually addressable. Cheers, -Nico
