UPDATE Feedback on Experimenting with Waterproof Connectors PLUS a Poll on Test Equipment Prizes

rscasny

About three weeks ago, I posted a forum discussion called Seeking Your Feedback on Upcoming Experimenting Challenge -- Waterproofing Electronics. You gave me some great feedback (changing challenge prizes) and what to include in the challenge kit. This is a follow up to that discussion.

Summarizing the Experimenting with Waterproofing Challenge

The idea is pretty basic. We would give each participant a kit with waterproof connectors, a customized watertight enclosure (with holes drilled for the panel mount connectors) and a single board computer. Your challenge would be to put it all together. You would have to mount the SBC in the enclosure and wire it up. Then, perform experiments that test the waterproofing capabilities of the connectors and enclosure. Write about the results in some blogs.

Kit Version #2

From your previous feedback, I now want to pass by you the current version of the kit. Any feedback you have would be appreciated.

Poll: What is Your Preferred Test Equipment Prizes
Some of you had mentioned that you would like prizes other than consumer electronics. So, I collected some test equipment that I could consider as prizes. Vote on your most preferred one. If you have any other choices, please comment below.

Thanks for the feedback and comments.

rscasny - Looks interesting and potentially straightforward to test. I look forward to applying (assuming I have the time). However, I just wanted to check that the connectors are not just "one-half" …

Thanks for reminding me about both halves.

Actually, the electronics are meant to be mounted in a watertight enclosure. So, what's being tested are IP67 waterproof connectors.

This is an awesome kit. Some of the connectors are only rated IP67 when they are mated, so both halves are needed. We will also need a 1m immersion tank to test IP67.

Thanks for the reminder about both halves. I think we missed that last time we put connectors in the kit.

I wasn't expecting a 1m tank to be supplied. Relaxed In case it came out that way...

I started looking for something that could be used and would be fairly inexpensive.

Something like this would have been relatively inexpensive and shippable, had it been 1m deep rather than 0.75m. As far as it goes, I still think it may be a case of being "close enough" for at least some basic testing.

Did think about trying a public pool with its chlorine and all, but I don't think they'd want you to take random electronics and throw them in. The reaction of the public may involve panic. But having air inside the enclosure also necessitates weighing it down in some way.
