Forget Me Knot - Week 0

31 Jul 2014

And so it begins...

I'm still in shock over being accepted, feels a bit like a blur. I would like to thank every involved for picking me. I am in awe for just being apart of the challenge. So thank you and I'm sorry for making you read that 5400+ word essay :-p

I foresee the main heart of the project will be based around the openHAB but I am to interface it with a couple of custom built user interfaces. As this is still a contest I'm going to hold back explaining the whole in and out of my project in this blog post. But I will explain what the plan is for this week. In no real order:-

  • Prep a Pi Image. I do have access to a Raspberry Pi Model B before the B+ turns up, but I only use 16+ GB Cards. So I will be prepping a fresh Raspbain image and size a 16gb card down to 8gb so I will easily be able to move the image onto the 8gb Micro SD that should be coming with the Model B+ (They did say they would be giving us a 8gb Micro SD card before they announced we would be getting the Model B+, didn't they?)
  • Installing and setting up openHAB runtime on the Pi.
  • Installing and setting up openHAB Designer on my my workstations.
  • Setting up a BitBucket Team and  repo's to keep all my work in.
  • Reading the openHAB Android App Source Code like its on Oprah's Book Club.
  • Cancelling my Social Life. image
  • Reading the openHAB runtime documentation.
  • Going over the research I have already done and compiling a list of the first parts I need to get started on some of the ideas.
  • Plus a ton more.

I'm going to leave this blog post at that for the time being as I'm going to crack on with some work and I'm going to be attending the Raspberry Pi Webinar which will be starting in 30 mins. I may come back and edit this Blog post with more planned work or I might post a week 0.5 blog in a few days.

To everyone else in the contest, congratulations on being apart of this contest. The next 3~ months are going to be a hell of a ride.

Is that half the fun :-p

Its a home automation project. Its actually something I've been wanting to do for a while. I'm going to be taking stuff around my home and hacking the heck out of them to bend them to my wishes.

Can you at least hint at what the main purpose of the application will be ? Would be interesting for others to know which idea got you selected image

As for the social life, surely this can be combined: work during the day, social life in the evening and working on your project at night ? image

    Good luck with your project!
