I'm pleased to say that Embedit Electronics, in collaboration with Cypress Semiconductor, have allocated 17 prototype units for the challengers involved in the Forget Me Not Challenge.  They are currently winging their way to our warehouse.

    I've spent all day thinking about this and this is my response.

     

    Thank you very very much for giving me the chance of getting this SOC add-on board to the Raspberry Pi. It is a very nice board indeed.

     

    BUT.

     

    1) I submitted a project that I felt happy being able to completely committing too.

    2) As the kickstarters say themselves this add on board offers the "Kitchen Sink" where my submission doesn't need this this much of a configurable tool.

    3) What I would use this board for (Real time operations) I had already planned to compensate for the lack of a RTOS the Raspberry Pi's kernel's offers using some off the shelf parts.

     

    After watching both the Recorded Video and the Kickstarter Video, This looks like a really great piece of kit for the Pi and I would happily have it in my toolbox BUT... Using the prototype quickly in the brief I gave to Element14 It is a) Overkill for what I need b) would mean I would have to redesign a part of my plan.

     

    SO, If you really want to give me a board I will of cause happily accept it, BUT you have done more than enough for me already. (Just yesterday I was using the scope you have given to me to figure out that I need to add a little bit of compensation to some voltage references) The fact that there are only 17 boards up for grabs and there are at least 20 of us taking part in this challenge, I am happy to just give up my place for this board. I'm sure one of the 5 without the budget/scope will find an a great use for this board.

     

    BUT to answer your question. What would I use it for.

    Well I would use it to replace the microcontroller I'm planning to use for the Real Time stuff I wish to add to my system. We could just pass commands to the board and let it do its thing and report back. It will cause a few aches changing my current plan to include this board but it could be done but the plan for my project can go without this board.

     

    So if there is only a limited number of boards I would rather give up my claim to a board to someone who didn't get the scope/budget/pi then only to think about how to use it later on in the build.

    This is the design challenge that keeps on giving :-)

     

    I've always loved the concept of PSoC, having configurable digital and programmable elements, plus automatic code-generation providing an API to the peripherals.

     

    The RPiSoC looks good - one of the limitations of the RPi is the lack of analog inputs. I like that the RPiSoC also supports Arduino. Unfortunately I think I might have to pass on this board. I'm already behind in my Forget-Me-Not development.

    Woi....worthy addition. Anybody uses RPi for physical computing is going to need one.

     

    What I will do with this?

    1. I'm interfacing IR transmitter and receiver into my project.

    2. Interfacing nRF24L01+ module to my project.

    3. Controlling my LED strip for various notifications.

    4. Integrate low cost analog temperature sensors with ADCs available.

    I was planning to use arduino( 2 atleast ) for interfacing these components. If I get this RPiSoC, I can easily integrate them all into same board.

    Also, I would like RPiSoC to receive the I2C bus data and present it in a nice format to RPi, thus offloading some tasks from RPi.
