The Forget Me Not Challenge - Now With Added RPiSoC!

Earlier this week, the element14 community was introduced to an exciting new Raspberry Pi Accessory, the RPiSoC, which is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter:
I'm pleased to say that Embedit Electronics, in collaboration with Cypress Semiconductor, have allocated 17 prototype units for the challengers involved in the Forget Me Not Challenge.  They are currently winging their way to our warehouse.

    Nice addition.  Makes it so we can have less dependence on auxiliary Arduinos when the RPi could be used.  I have two mini projects that could use a single RPiSoc for my home automation project.

     

    1)  Dog Location Indicator, or "Dog Vane"

     

    As part of my project, I'm building a GPS dog collar that communicates with OpenHAB and alarms when the dog goes beyond the yard.  I want a large indicator in the living room that points to the direction of the dog, so you always have awareness of where the dog is.  I can use the Living Room Raspberry Pi and the RPISoC to control the direction of a an arrow mounted on a servo motor.  As the dog wonders around the yard, the large arrow on a stick points towards where the dog is.  When the dog wonders off the yard and the OpenHAB sounds an alarm, you can look up to see which direction the arrow is pointing.

    2)  I already have a Garage Door monitor as part of my project.  I have a couple of relays connected to the Raspberry Pi , this would provide additional output for the garage door remote.

     

    So that would be the short term use of the RPiSoC.  My next project requires a bigger budget and more time, which won't fit within this Element 14 competition.  But I'd like to build a doll-house size replica of my house, complete with servo controlled garage door and windows.  Using OpenHAB rules and the Raspberry Pi, when the real garage door or window is opened, I would make the replica house open the corresponding door/windows.  And I would also have simple light sensors monitoring which rooms have the lights on, and turn on tiny LED's in the corresponding rooms in the replica house.  And when the washer or dryer is running, I'll turn on a red LED on the replica basement washer to show it's in the on state.  The replica house would also play the same audio alarms and cues.

     

    The doll house would be a physical dashboard that's powered by Openhab, instead of a virtual dashboard being displayed on a tablet.  The neat thing is I could put the replica in some other house or at work, and open up a secure MQTT connection to my home server...an interesting twist on remote home monitoring.  A Raspberry Pi and the RPiSoC would do the servo control, LED's, and audio alarms on the doll house.

    The kickstarter has some additional benefits ... get in early and get the programmer.

     

    I signed for one as it's a worthwhile addition.
