How chill is your fridge???

crosseyejack
crosseyejack over 11 years ago

So playing around with the EnOcean temp sensor and I have the thought, "I wonder if it will work in my fridge???"

Now where the pi is set up atm there is some fairly well built walls in the way between it and the fridge and of cause the fact that a fridge is a big metal box. So will it work? Well it turns out it does and the sensor is reporting back 3.9C (around 39F).

Just a bit of a random post. (Hence the discussion not blog post, blog post will come either Wednesday or Thursday. Want to chase this bug a little more first).

Dan :-)

I did this as part of a test, I got 5 degrees Celsius.

I wonder how long the battery would last.

Its currently sitting at 4.4C Its too late in the night now (my bed is calling me) but for ***'s and giggles I think I'm gonna log the data tomorrow (must check the datasheet of the temp sensor and make sure it will like running at those temps. I don't see it being an issue, but better safe than sorry.

EDIT: Actually a quick Google later rates it's Operating temperature between -20C and up to +60C though its measurement temp seems to be between 0C and 40C so no real point plotting the temp changes of my freezer.

Well looking at the datasheet it should be OK in a home freezer but its temp measurement range seems to be 0-40 °C so it prob it won't return any useful info.

I got logging working :-D it was a simple case of giving openHAB some mysql details and setting up a rule to write the data into the database. I set up a simple PHP page to pull the results and display them https://pi.fmkapp.uk/temp.php (Atm the sensor is just sitting in my living room, my fridge isn't those temps) but soon after the Raspberry Pi had an "unexpected power cycle" (loose USB Cable) and it refused to reconnect to ttyAMA0. After a few hours and pulling half my hair out I finally got it working again. So well at least it will make for a good blog post :-p

EDIT: More head banging. And its working again. Just no one breath around my pi. :-p
