I spent last week camping with my 5-year old. I didn't take my laptop with me, but I did take some stuff to make the camera I had in mind for my project
This is how my work-/sewingstation looked like! An herd of sheep standing on the other side of the water kept looking at me and loudly commenting on the progress.. BAAH!
Since my camera has to be suitable for small children, I decided to make it nice and soft. So the interior is made out of two pieces of foam. I cut out a few holes for the Flora and the NeoPixels. When I come to the end of this project I'll have to cut away some more foam to make room for buttons, a buzzer and more.
The pieces of foam will be coated with wool felt. This is a nice natural fabric that is better suited for kids than felt made out of synthetic fibre.
I started out by cutting two pieces of foam and creating room for the flora in the middle, and for the 4 pixels on the back. After that I cut a piece of felt to coat the back of the camera. I cut 4 holes in this patch, one for the viewfinder pixel, and 3 holes for the 'gamepixels'. I covered the holes with fabric I normally use for the lining in skirts. I tried out this fabric with the pixels, and I think it creates the right amount of diffusion. The foam takes on the color of the pixels, thats why I used a very dark blue/purple felt on the back. This should conceal any coloring of the foam, and thereby showing the color just in the round hole.
Pff.. that's actually hard for me to explain in english! Luckily I made a few photos to clarify!
The first picture shows the foam I'm using with the Flora and the pixels in place. The second picture shows what the back of the camera looks like now.
But now it's time to get out of my comfortzone again!
The next step in my project is to make sure that I can get the Flora and my elements to do what I want them to do.. Last night I was able to attach a pushbutton and a NeoPixel. And now, when I push the button, the color of the pixel changes. No pushing = green pixel / pushing = blue pixel! Hurray! It took me about 3 hours, but I'm pretty happy with the result
Plus, I actually wrote code! I've never ever done that before! And the best part is.. I actually understand what I wrote! And it works too..
Tonight I want to try to include the color sensor. Pushing the button should activate the color sensor, and the color should go to the pixel.. I'll report back when I've managed to do that!
