Today I finished all the components necessary to finally assemble the hat. I covered the tip and sideband with the velvet I had swirled in a previous post. Then I stitched them together into one unit, the crown. After finishing work on the crown, I sewed organza ribbons together to make a ribbon for the cockade. I made about a yard of ribbon, and I played with it and a NeoPixel ring to determine the best way to show it off.
I made a base to sew the ring and ribbons to by fusing together two layers of STIFF STUFF FIRM SEW IN INTERFACING - Interfacing - Supplies … sandwiched between a layer of reflective fabric and a layer of plain black cotton. I pierced holes for the wires with an ice pick and sewed the ring to the base. To help keep some distance between the NeoPixels and the ribbon, I sewed a small ring of 3/8" Tubular Crinoline Horsehair on top of the NeoPixel ring.
After making the cockade, I made the hatband. I used strips cut from the reflective fabric woven with other reflective ribbon. I used a piece of grosgrain ribbon to band the top and bottom edges.
I sewed the banding at the top, but I will wait to sew the bottom banding until after I attach the brim so I can hide my stitches. Now all parts are together and ready for the final assembly.
Here is a video detailing the steps I took. (no sound)
