Coachman's Navigational Top Hat: Design time

Today I took a break from constructing the base of my top hat to consider how I was going to run the electrics in it and how I wanted to cover it. The magnetometer needs to be flat to operate properly, so I will mount it inside the hat at the tip. I will have a feather and fiber optic spray on the left side above the cockade. The cockade will be a 16 Neopixel ring covered in a pleated organza ribbon and featuring the Gemma at its center.  The battery will be inside the hat on the right side for better balance. The 16 sew on Neopixels around the brim will be covered with something for diffusion.

I got a nicely textured velvet to cover the hat with. I want to make a wide hatband out of strips of the 3M reflective fabric and the ribbon. I cut some test strips to see what weaving pattern I liked best.

Coming up next...

Back to working on the base, making the tip and preparing the tip and sideband for covering.

    Nice post.

I had never thought about weaving patterns, but I can see now that you can make a lot of cool effects.

    Thanks
