Welcome to Petals: Part a zillion! Well it feels like that. The making of the petals has been a long, slow process. Once I'd finally made all the petals out of wire and wrapped then in black electrical break, I had to take a short break because the material that I wanted to use was white and the cuts in my fingers from the wire were making everything red! Finally after much waiting I was able to complete the petals! They look something a bit like this:
I have spoken for a while about using acetate or a shiny material to add to the petal to try and make it reflect the light nicely. I spent ages online and in craft stores trying to find something suitable, but nothing really took my fancy. Until I came across some shiny gift wrap I had all along!
I really liked the pattern on it and the way it reflected the light. So this is what I used in my petal.
To draw the petal shape, I turned the gift wrap onto its white side and drew around the centre of the petal. I then moved the petal keeping it in the same orientation so that it is that when I come to fix the gift wrap to it everything lines up.
I then cut around the petal shape leaving a good couple of millimetres from the lines so that I could fix it to the petal easily after.
I then used an eraser to remove the pencil line. At first I decided to fix the foil wrap to the petal using PVA glue, but by the time I'd got to the 7th petal the wrap was not sticking to the previous ones. I quickly scrapped that idea and reached for my glue gun. That worked a treat! The final petal looks something like this:
The following video shows how it reflects the NeoPixel light (it doesn't look so great in the video, in reality it looks loads better):
All petals are now completed - just need to construct the flowers now!
